The Wizard of Oz L. Frank Braum's classic story of Dorothy's adventures in the land of Oz. A young girl finds herself trapped in a strange world. Looking for a way to return home she has been told to follow the yellow brick road to ask the Wizard of Oz for help. Along the way she befriends a Scarecrow, a Tinman, and a Lion. However the wicked witch of the east wanting revenge for her sisters death has other plans for Dorothy.

My favourite character The Scarecrow is Dorothy’s first companion. His single desire is to have a brain. I adore him, because he is always ready to help, very nurturing toward Dorothy and Toto. Sometimes he is a bit clumsy and funny and makes me laugh, but the Scarecrow often volunteers to go ahead of the group to test landscapes and even rocks, comes up with plans to save the travelers, is quick with solutions to problems. I don’t think he needs to be given a brain. He is already quite intelligent and smart.

Good Versus Evil I think one of the main themes of the book is the struggle between good and evil. There are two good witches and two wicked witches. The wicked witches are unable to protect themselves against Dorothy, who is so good that she feels remorse at killing them. The good always triumphs over evil, and evil respects the power of good. I think that the author also teaches young readers that it is not possible to label real people good or evil because in reality, everybody has a little of both in them.

Conclusion The book provides great satisfaction for me. While reading I found myself in the characters’ world, in the world of fantasy. I think, it can be enjoyed by all family members. The characters are very believable. The Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and the Lion are made so human with their desires for human qualities. I fell in love with the wonders of the dream-come-true world of enchanted land. Colorful characters, frightening villains, and amazing landscapes, all make this work one of the most fascinating and unusual stories ever dreamed up.

Heidi by J. Spyri This beautiful, stirring novel tells of five-year-old Heidi, an orphan sent to live high up in the mountains with her cantankerous grandfather. Sweet-natured Heidi soon wins her grandfather's heart and makes friends with the lively young goatherd, Peter. Her newfound happiness ends quickly, however, when Heidi's aunt, Dete, takes her off to the city of Frankfurt to be a companion to a sickly child. Finally Heidi is restored to her Alpine home. And when her new friend, Clara, joins her in the mountains, Heidi's innocent charm and the majestic beauty of the Alps combine to work a healing miracle.

My favourite character I think that Heidi is an adorable and charming little girl with a great deal of inner strength. She is full of love and devotion towards everybody around her: her grandfather – Heidi softened his heart and turned the bad-tempered man into a loving guardian, Peter with whom she made friends very easily, a 12-year old invalid girl Clara, for whom Heidi became a beautiful companion and helped be healthy. Maybe Heidi is too good to be real, but I want to believe in her world, as it is the world of life, hope and inspiration.

The country and the city: a better place to live. One of the important themes in the book is a contrast between the city and the country. In the countryside, with its beautiful landscapes, mountain air, green grass, animals and flowers a person is happy and healthy. However, in the city, he feels miserable and can even become mentally disturbed, like Heidi. Clara, too, is sick in the city, and only the country is responsible for her recovery. The author stresses that even though people may be richer in the city, it seems that city life makes them ill. But, the country provides a better and a happier, though poorer, way of life.

Conclusion I find the book unique, because a little girl changed people’s lives. It’s full of joy and power. It has a good story line, it’s interesting and exciting. The author described the scenery, the characters, the events in such a way that I could easily picture them in my mind. I think the leading theme of the healing power of nature and optimism that make people happy sounds very clearly. And this is so important to be and help people be happy, even though you are still very small.
