Russian Art Nouveau: escaping the scopes of culture At the end of the 19 th century the new style named Art Nouveau (also known as Jugendstil ) was born in the Western part of Europe and began to comprise many spheres of architecture and Applied Art. This stream of art wasn’t formed occasionally. During the 19 th century there was no permanent and harmonically established art style. This fact had prompted the artists to refuse the old motives in culture and to develop new rules.

Muses of Art Nouveau are Beauty, Poetry and Nature At the same time such merits as sophistication, refinement and spirituality are appreciated. Artists use flexible, fluid, tremulous and malleable shapes, and the colors are pale and muted . In Art Nouveau there is a strongly marked consistency in tastes and values of many different artists (even from different countries). Without any negotiations, but all of them had chosen the same stories and expressed the same emotions.

Russian masters We can make a list of those Russian masters, whose art mainly determined various sides and facets of Russian Art Nouveau. In Fine Arts these are V.M. Vasnetsov , M.A.Vrubel , M.V.Nesterov , A.Y.Golovin , A.S.Golubkina , S.V.Malutin , leading figures of artistic movement “World of Art”: K.A.Somov , L.S. Bukst , A.N.Benua . Listing masters of Art Nouveau in architecture and Applied Art we must mention once again such names as V.M. Vasnetsov , M.A.Vrubel , S.V.Malutin . Architecture of Russian Art Nouveau Russian Art Nouveau was separated in different branches, from which we can see that Russian architects began to develop in their creation process on classical heritage. Even the most successful modernists such as F.I. Lidval , F.O. Shehtel and others worked in retrospective shapes, styling them with the spirit of new requirements. One of the architects who embodied the main tendencies of Russian Art Nouveau most completely was F.Shehtel . He instinctively moved towards to style of Art Nouveau working as a decorator in a theatre, people’s celebrations decorator and a creator of architecture shows (that corresponds to the origins of Art Nouveau). Art Nouveau in Russian packaging Many famous artists were invited to work in this area by managers of industrial plants. By the end of the 19 th century there would have been V.Vasnetsov , F.Shehtel . M.Vrubel , M.Belsky in Russia that would use in their work New Russian Style . Irises, lilies, chrysanthemums, orchids are on the postcards, wallpapers, book covers, advertisements, posters and… numerous of packagings and labels. Artists also use images of sea waves and underwater reign. More often Russian artists used Art Nouveau to design labels for cosmetics and perfumes, bakery and liquors. To decorate perfume products Russian artists started to use pictures of Russian nature in all its diversity and beauty.

Many Russian artists and masters of Applied Art worked in style of Art Nouveau. However, along with the development of Art Nouveau on the international arena, in Russia there was founded its own national version of “New style”. Externally it is differ from “original” Art Nouveau, so contemporaries named it “New Russian style” or “Russian Art Nouveau”. New Russian Style is a new-born modification of Art Nouveau that was founded on Russian ground.
