Let your imagination run wild and conjure up an image of a young unmarried woman, who has recently graduated from a college and now is joyfully enjoying her life . Her family’s income is rather high to protect her mind from unpleasant thoughts of making her ends meet. It’s also high enough to cram her wardrobe with everlasting streams of glamorous garments. You are likely to say: «Sallie McBride is an indulgent little thing! » But do not presume to judge!

Pretty Christmas presents can change our life as well as adversities. What would you like to get on the threshold of unrestraint Christmas merrymaking ? Have you never dreamed to be put in the charge of a rickety orphan asylum ? Sallie McBride, soon-to-be a fiancée in the most expensive fork and veil is in the head of such an asylum ? The very that Sallie, who’s never done something more responsible than going shopping ?! It seems to be a ridiculous joke . But don’t hasten to laugh.

If you want to galvanize somebody into action, just say to him that he is hardly able to cope with the task. For the certain effect try to sound a little bit mockingly. Sallie’s boyfriend «laughed uproariously at the idea of her being a head of an orphan asylum » Sometimes, when we have to give up an accustomed way of life, such trusted and predictable, it seems to be a ruthless betrayal from our fate, while is going to be a real blessing.

This story is written in a form of letters. It’s like reading somebody’s diary, where everything is unique: a handwriting, a way of thoughts, views on all happenings . The epistolary genre is a fascinating chance to see the world through somebody’s eyes: when you start you may feel uneasy, but when you go on you may find a treasure house.

The story itself is about how Sallie gets acquainted with the asylum and its inhabitants, how she’s growing into personality under the influence of difficult circumstances. The staff considers her as too young and unable to do this kind of work, but they gradually are changing their politics upon her. Sallie gets down to the work assiduously; there is a hundred of starving, pale children, they’re afraid of the world around them, they don’t venture neither laugh nor play. They’ve being so painstakingly turned into lifeless obedient creatures by a previous superintendent that can see nothing but rules and penalties.

« Horror piled on horror- those bare drab walls and oil-cloth-covered tables with tin cups and plates and wooden benches …» There is a Scotch doctor, Robin MacRae, «A red-haired person of Irish forbears», who is new in this asylum. abominable/hideous/oppressive/antagonistic/dour/gruff/inhuman.. Sallie says: «We are going to have a wonderful time working together! »
Слайд 9
Sallie has a handsome prospective bridegroom- Gordon, very bright politician, but they are getting farther and farther, that’s obvious from the following topical vocabulary ( to be annoyed/To be quite comfortably alive whether your boyfriend is here or not/to grow into a very different person from the girl one fell in love with/no longer have any interests in common/ to quarrel definitely and finally/to go off in a big smoky explosion)
Слайд 10
«During those agonizing moments while I thought we had lost our doctor, I realized what his life meant, and how much more significant than Gordon’s». She didn’t accept Gordon’s proposal and they split up. The following topical vocabulary helps us to see, what her feelings like ( a sense of joyous relief and freedom/ to feel wonderfully and beautifully alone/ to feel beautifully, wonderfully, electrically free/ to find new life and exuberance/ to feel as though you’ve been released from prison/ it’s wonderful not to be going to marry someone you don’t want to marry…)

«When I call you MacRae I don’t like you, and when I call you Enemy I do. Two happiest things in life are going to be ours, a FRIENDLY marriage and work we love. »

How mischievous children should be treated? One will assume that a mischievous child doesn't deserve anything but penalties. "Beating did nothing to lessen the temper» was said in the story. Mischievousness is just the result of previous unhappy circumstances. Mischievousness is the immediate result of a child's wretchedness. This book reveals the author's deep understanding of a child's nature. And, moreover, the story teaches us to follow our hearts and not to lose our own selves. Don’t be afraid of what people will say, they always will. Sallie ventured to break up with her prospective groom, and decided to be with one who she really loved. She didn’t hesitate and struggled for her happiness.

Gordon was carrying a b r oken, b r uised, b et r ayed heart ( Words are getting heavy with such sounds, and by the combination of br the main author’s target is achieved : oppressive atmosphere is created, and we feel what Gordon feels after splitting up with Sallie ) My doo m beca m e m ore and m ore i mm inent ( such a great emotional tension is build up by this repetition ) …for such a se l fish, l uxurious, and l azy person … ( We feel as though laziness in the air) Alliteration

Rhyme Robin MacRae/ Smiled today! ( so we realize, that it’s almost impossible to catch Robin MacRae smiling)
Слайд 15
Irony( a device on which the whole story is based) I detest him on sight, and he detests me. Oh, we are going to have a sweet time working together 2) Have you no pity for those defenseless little orphan children? I have, and I respectfully decline the position which you offer. 3) He hasn’t any more feeling for children personally than for so many frogs that he might happen to be dissecting . 4) I have adopted for our doctor a special pet name
Слайд 16
The antithesis When he states that the world is round , I instantly assert it to be triangular The romantic glamour which Judy cast over this orphan asylum exists only in her poetic imagination. The place is AWFUL! the author capitalizes on engendering contradictory feelings in our soul (firstly- admiration, then- disgust), and against the background of Judy’s beautiful dream the asylum turns into a horrifying thing . We had a nice, cheerful talk on the subject of drunkenness, idiocy, epilepsy and insanity.
Слайд 17
During the hour he spent in my society no shadow of a smile so much as lightened the straight line of his mouth . But, my dear, if ever in our lives again we have the tiniest little cloud of a misunderstanding .. Through the use of litotes the author depicts a «new» Sallie McBride, who is full of gentleness, which is reflected in her language) Litotes
Слайд 18
Hyperbole I could make the rippingest superintendent that any 111 orphans ever had . (Through the use of this device the author emphasizes Sallie’s high expectations. We see that she is overcome with pleasant trepidation about her future)
Слайд 19
Ritorical question Isn’t it a tragedy when people mistake their vocations? ( evokes so much thoughts in a reader ) Personification The John Grier Home is smiling Spring must be lurking about somewhere
Слайд 20
Metaphor And it’s too herculean a task.. ( Metaphor and hyperbole altogether make us feel what burden the headship of the orphan asylum is) Simile He’s as companionable as a granite tombstone ( due to it we can imagine how uneasy character Robin MacRae possesses)
Слайд 21
Periphrasis Paragon of a doctor A dungeon of a playroom Composite blur of white face and blue check (children) A chamber of horrors Dazzling dream of yellow paint (dining room) Old termagant of a housekeeper
Слайд 22
Cohesion …Poor, foolish, silly life, if you will, but my own. And I have missed it. Ellipsis Mail received and contents noted (notional verb is omitted)

If I decided to write out all stylistic devices, I would be doing it up to now. Jean Webster’s language has stroke me once, and still strikes me every time I open this book . I remember I’d been seeking for a mastership in despair, rejecting nearly every book, and just accidentally I found this one. And only he has a right to evaluate this book, who has read each and every its line. Until you don’t, all stunning devices and phrases mean nothing but just words.
