Classical literature: still actual or relic of the past? It is still learnt at school and universities, the problems and situations are analyzed, books’ characters are compared with real people we meet in our life, but is it worth doing? Unfortunately, young people have begun to lose interest in reading books at all.
Personally, I think that classical literature is the literature basis, it is rather a sign of the quality that only the best and time-tested and loved by people works are deserved. It is an ensample for future generations, I can say. Most modern novelists are inspired by classical writers. I consider some phrases written by outstanding authors are far apart the situations and used as idioms. Moreover, while reading classics we learn a proper language and enrich our vocabulary. "When I read authors who write well, I get used to speak well". (Voltaire) .We even try understanding ourselves through the behavior of main characters. Nevertheless, many people are convinced that reading classics is a waste of time. They firmly believe that information technology can substitute reading, definitely regarding it more useful. I can’t agree with such opinion. Computers force us think less, let alone musing on the future and engaging in speculation on man's ultimate destiny.
Taking everything into consideration, I can say that it is really necessary to read classics. Reading helps people to be more educated, thoughtful and well- mannered. As Russian proverb says: «A mind without books like a bird without wings».
