A trip around London
Good afternoon, dear guests! Today we are going to visit London which is the capital of Great Britain. At first, I would like you to know about the plan of our excursion. We’ll visit such famous places as Tower Bridge, The Tower of London, 30 St. Mary Axe, St. Paul’s Cathedral, The Globe Theatre, The London Eye, Trafalgar Square, 10 Downing Street, Big Ben, Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace.
Firstly, I would like to say that London was founded in 55 BC by Romans. This city is Britain’s political, economic and cultural centre.
Our first stop is Tower Bridge. It is one of the most famous bridges in the world. This is a bridge across the Thames. The bridge consists of two towers which are tied together. The bridge was opened in 1894 by the Prince of Wales.
Near Tower Bridge there is The Tower of London which is the oldest building in the city built in the 11-th century. It used to be a prison, a fortress, a palace, a treasury and even a zoo. The oldest part of the Tower is the White Tower. Most of the public displays are in the White Tower nowadays.
Now you can see 30 St. Mary Axe. It is a skyscraper in London’s financial district, the City of London. The skyscraper was built in 2004. There are 41 floors in it. The tower is 180 metres tall.
Our next stop is St. Paul’s Cathedral. St. Paul’s Cathedral is the city’s greatest monument. It was built by Sir Christopher Wren. There are a lot of paintings sculptures and other works of art in St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Now we are next to the Globe Theatre. The Globe Theatre is connected with the name of William Shakespeare who founded it in 1599. The original Globe Theatre burnt to the ground during the Great Fire of 1666. The new Globe Theatre opened in 1997.
In front of you there is The London Eye. It is a giant observation wheel. The 135 meter tall structure was built as a part of London’s millennium celebrations.
The next stop is Trafalgar Square which is the largest square in London. It was named in honour to Admiral Nelson’s victory at the battle of Trafalgar. At the middle of the square stands a tall column, a monument to Admiral Nelson. Trafalgar Square has become famous as a point for all kinds of demonstrations, marches and meetings.
Now we are near 10 Downing Street. It is the residence and office of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. It is located in central London, a few minutes’ walk from the Houses of Parliament.
Let’s look at the most famous clock in the world. Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. It is officially named Elizabeth Tower, as well. The biggest bell is known as Big Ben. The bell is named after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben.
Our next stop is Palace of Westminster. Palace of Westminster also known as the Houses of Parliament is the seat of Britain’s two parliamentary houses, the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Westminster Bridge is a road over the Thames.
Now we are next to Westminster Abbey which is one of the most popular cathedrals. It is a Gothic monastery church that is a traditional place of coronation and burial for British monarchs. A lot of famous people are buried inside: Queen Elizabeth I, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and many others.
And our last stop is Buckingham Palace. It is one of several palaces owned by the British Royal family, is the residence of British kings and queens for ages. The palace is very big. When Queen Elizabeth is at home the flag is above the palace.
At the end of our excursion I should say that London is really a great city. I would like you to visit it one more time.
Thank you for your attention! Good-bye!
