ABOUT THE AUTHOR Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett was born in Manchester, England in 1849. She married in 1873, and her first novel, That Lass o`Lowrie`s , came out in 1877. After that, came more stories for adults and children, but in 1905 she wrote A little princess . It was made into a film in 1939, with Shirley Temple as Sara. Frances Burnett was a very popular writer in her time. She often came back to visit England, but she died in the USA in 1924, in a beautiful house on Long Island.

Sara Crewe was seven years old, when her mother died. So, Sara and her father left India. One day the Crewes arrived at Miss Minchin`s school in London. Miss Minchin was a strict woman, but she liked Sara because her father was rich.

A week later Mr. Crewe left London. Sara was very sad at first, but she was a clever girl and she told interesting stories about beautiful countries across the sea. So, Sara soon made new friends at school.

But when you are rich everybody is your friend… On Sara`s eleventh birthday, some terrible news from India came. Ralph Crewe put all his money in his friend`s diamonds mines – but there weren`t any! His good friend run away, and Sara`s father was dead a week later.

Poor Sara had to work for her bread and sleep in the cold, dirty attic. Her true friend Ermengard sometimes visited her and one night Sara, Becky(she was a servant in Miss Minchin`s school too) and Ermengard had a “party”. But Miss Minchin learnt about this and punished the girls.

After two or three hours Sara opened her eyes and the room was different – very different. There were new blankets, a hot fire and nice things to eat. In the evening Sara and Becky sat by fire. Suddenly, The monkey jumped down into the room. It lived in the house next door. It was very late and Sara decided he could stay in her room.

Next morning Sara brought the monkey to the house next door. She learnt, the Indian gentleman who lived there was her “good” father`s friend! Mr. Carrisford looked for Ralph`s daughter but he didn`t know her name. He wanted to take care of Sara and they left England.
