Sergei Alexandrovich Yesenin ( 1895 – December 27, 1925) was a Russian lyrical poet. He was one of the most popular and well-known Russian poets of the 20th century. Sergei Yesenin was born in Konstantinovo in the Ryazan region of the Russian Empire in a peasant family. He spent most of his childhood in his grandparents' house . He began to write poetry at the age of nine.

In 1912, he moved to Moscow where he worked as a corrector of the press in a printing house . Next year he entered the Moscow State University and had been studing there for a year and a half . In 1915, he moved to St. Petersburg, where he know fellow-poets Alexander Blok, Sergey Gorodetsky, Nikolai Klyuev and Andrei Bely. It was in St. Petersburg where he became well known in literature society .

Career In 1916, Yesenin published his first collection of poems, Ritual for the Dead ( Radunitsa , Russian: Радуница). He became one of the most popular poets of that time . His first marriage was in 1913 to Anna Izryadnova, a co-worker from the publishing house, wife was had a son, Yuri.

Later that year, he moved to St Petersburg, where he met Klyuev. From 1916 to 1917, Yesenin joinled the army , but soon after the great October Revolution 1917, Russia stopped to take part in the World War I. Believing that the revolution would bring a better life, Yesenin first supported it, but soon he as disappointed and sometimes criticized the Bolshevik authority in his poems .

In August 1917 Yesenin married the second time to an actress, Zinaida Raikh . They had two children, a daughter Tatyana and a son Konstantin. Konstantin Yesenin bec a me a well-known statistician of football later .

In autumn 1921, during his to visit the studio of painter Ghyorghi Yakulov, Yesenin met the it was in Paris American dancer Isadora Duncan. They married on May 2, 1922. His marriage with Duncan was short.

I n May 1923, he came back to Moscow. His son from Nadezhda Volpin was born the same year . Sergei Yesenin never knew his son by Volpin, him but Alexander Esenin-Volpin grew up and bec a me a famous poet. Also h e was an activist in Soviet Union dissident movement in the 1960s with Andrei Sakharov and others. After moving to the United States, Esenin-Volpin became a well-known mathematician.

L ast years and death The last two years of Yesenin's life were filled with constant erratic and he drunk a lot behavior, but he also created some of his most famous poems. In 1925 Yesenin met and married his fifth wife, Sophia Andreyevna Tolstaya, a granddaughter of Leo Tolstoy. She to tried help him but he suffered a from complete mental problem and was hospitalized for a month. Two days later after h e was release d he cut his hand and wrote the last poems with his blood. Next day ( it was annoyneced in newspapers later ) he hanged himself on the hot radiator in the hotel " Angleterre " .

Cultural impact Although he was one of most popular poets in Russia and had an elaborate funeral by the State, most of his writings were banned by the Kremlin during the reigns of Joseph Stalin and Nikita Khrushchev. Nikolay Bukharin's criticism of Esenin contributed significantly to the banning. Only in 1966 most of his works were republished. Sergei Yesenin's poems are taught by Russian schoolchildren and many of them have been set to music , as popular songs. They are very famouse.
