Anichkov palace, the history
My name is Alex Kotenko.
I study in the 5th grade,
at school 291 in St-Petersburg.
There is a palace in St. Petersburg, built by decree of Elizabeth Petrovna. Building of the palace in the style of baroque was launched in 1741. One of the most famous Russian architects Mikhail Grigorievich Zemtsov made the project. After the death of Zemtsov another well-known architect F.B. Rastrelli completed the palace. The palace was built on the bank of the river Fontanka.
Construction works continued for thirteen years and finally finished in 1754. The palace was presented to Aleksey Razumovsky. After his death, the palace reverted to the crown, but soon Catherine the Great of Russia gave it to Prince Potemkin in 1776. The architect Ivan Starov was rebuilt the palace in the newly-fashionable Neoclassical style. A regular park was laid out by an English garden architect, William Hould. It is an interesting legend about the name of the palace. The soldiers of the admiralty battalion of the officer M. Anichkov built the first wooden bridge across the Fontanka river, that is known as Anichkov bridge now. Several years later a new palace became this name too. In the reign of Alexander III the palace became the imperial residence. In halls of the palace you can see the remarkable collection of paintings . After the October revolution in 1917 there was the Museum of old St-Petersburg. In 1935 it was converted into “the palace for pioneers”. It was called the Young Pioneer Palace. Since that time the palace has housed over hundred after-school clubs for more than 10,000 children.
During the Great Patriotic War in 1941 there was a hospital. After the hospital was closed in May 1941, the Palace was re-opened for children of blockade. It was very important for boys and girls, who lived in that horrible time. The palace and the teachers, who worked there, helped children to survive.
Nowadays the Anichkov palace is very famous in our city. Many boys and girls visit it every day. There you can find a theatre club, a circus club, a painting studio and many others after-school activity clubs.

Krasnoye Selo
My name is Natela Kartevadze.
I am twelve years old.
I live in St-Petersburg.
St-Petersburg is a very large city situated in the north-west of our country. It has a population of about 5000000 people. There are many districts in St-Petersburg. Some of them are old, some are new. I live in Krasnoselsky district, the new one. The Krasnoselsky district is located in the southwest. It was founded in 1973. The history of a name was very simple. There was a suburb of St-Petersburg called Krasnoye Selo, which was developed in a district of the city. Now Krasnoye Selo is a part of the new district.
The district has about 600 hectares .It is possible to name it one of the cleanest part of our city. There are three large parks thee: South park, Pine Glade and, at last, Palezhaevsky park.
If you watch a map of our district, you can see the streets names. Most of them have the names of the famous heroes of the Great Patriotic War: Marschal Zakharov Street, Richard Sorge Street, Marschal Kazakov Street, Partizan German Street and others. You can find also Doblesty Street and Street of Heroes.
There are many new buildings in my district: beautiful blocks of flats, modern schools, nice kindergartens. I study at a new school, which was opened in September 2011. It's one of the most modern schools in the city. There are two pools, two gyms, a large playground. There is the most up-to-date equipment in my school: computers, document cameras and electronic boards in each classroom. There is also our local TV and printing office at school. Children like to study at this school!
Welcome to my city and my school.
