Dear Mr. Gagarin,
It’s so exciting to appeal to such a legendary person like you. Every person knows your name has become a symbol of heroism in the name of modern science and progress not only in Russian history but in the whole world!
By the way my name is Irina Maslova and I live in a small town near Moscow, in Lytkarino. Our town has very old history. It’s a lovely place to live in because of breathtaking nature views. But its name is also connected with modern science. There are two factories: The LZOS and The Saturn here. For example, The LZOS constructed huge lens for Sputnik-1.
In addition, I’m only 16-year old student of 10th form at school number 3. Most of my friends are my classmates. We spend plenty of time together, helping each other and entertaining in different ways from watching movies to cycling. To sum up, I’m very active person. I’ve tried to do many things like diving, dancing, painting, playing the piano and some other. However my real passions are learning English and Astrology. I’ve been studying English for 8 years and I love it a lot. But sorry to say I haven’t ever had a chance to learn Astrology.
When I was a child I used to read books by Kir Bulychev about the girl called Alisa who was travelling in the spaceship to the mysterious, unknown places. I fell in love with these wonderful stories telling about faraway stars and planets. I dreamed to be the similar one and to meet various creatures from other galaxies. It is so weird that we live in the Earth in such endless cosmos with a great number of worlds. Gazing at the night sky I imagine what a small thing people can be as compared with the immense Universe. So we just can’t be alone. I want to believe people will find intellect species someday.
Undoubtedly, you made people a little closer to this wish. On April 12 in 1961 you were launched into space. And your flight opened the door into the Universe. Those 108 minutes were a turning point in human history. As you are not just a dreamer but active person who did everything he could to make his wishes. You inspired a lot of men for unusual things and creative actions. I suggest you’ve become not only a first human-being in the space but a national hero.
What is more, I’ve always admired your courage. Eventually, you had experienced amount of troubles and difficulties to get what you wanted. I know you entered the Cosmonaut Training Centre in 1960. You believed in the success of the flight. You were a quick witted, courageous and resolute man. On the other hand, your modesty, great human warmth and attentiveness to others were well known. You put your whole soul, all your strength into “cosmic work”. So in my point of view you are an example of the best side of human nature.
Moreover, thanks to your first manned space flight our country consolidated its authority in space exploration. Your deed was not only brave but patriotic.
All in all when I feel sad and depressed and it seems to me I’m not able to get over any problem. I can just have a look at the endless magnificent sky and remember your heroic exploit and that’s always enough to believe in my opportunities. As I just imagine you were absolutely alone in your spaceship, launching into the loneliness of the sky, but you realized you couldn’t disappoint people and you did your best to cope with your difficult task!
This flight and your name will remain immortal in the history of the Earth. It will stay in all the areas of human lives – on the maps of the cities and towns, in the names of the streets, in literature, art and music and certainly in the science and technology.
Your name will live in the hearts of every human being forever!
Sincerely yours,
Irina
