Archaeological evidence Wooden paddle dolls are one of the oldest dolls . They were discovered in ancient Egyptian tombs. Ancient Greek dolls with articulate limbs. Romans made dolls from clay, wood, ivory or rags.

The first doll set was made in 1890 at a toy company on the Abramtsevo estate in Moscow. In 1870, the estate had been purchased by Savva Mamontov . Savva Mamontov's wife presented the dolls at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, where the toy earned a bronze medal.

Matryoshka dolls They are Russian dolls designed in 1890. They are made from set of similar doll that are hollow and can be put inside each other. Largest Matryoshka is usually a woman while the smallest is a baby made from a single piece of wood.

The Barbie Doll The Barbie doll was invented in 1959 by Ruth Handler, whose own daughter was named Barbara . Barbie was introduced to the world at the American Toy Fair in New York City. Barbie's job was to serve as a teenage fashion doll. The Ken doll was named after Ruth's son and was introduced two years after Barbie in 1961.
