PART 1. THE HISTORY AND TRADITIONS OF CHRISTMAS
1.1 THE HISTORY OF THE BIRTH OF CHRISTMAS
Christmas is the great Christian festival of the birth of God's son Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. Services of the birth of Jesus are in the churches every year in the world. We hear about the birth of the savior of our world.
1.2 WHY CHRISTMAS IS CELEBRATED TWICE IN THE WORLD?
Christmas is celebrated in many countries. Only the date and calendar style are differ (Julian and Gregorian ). People live in the Gregorian calendar and meet this holiday on the night of 24-25 of December. Orthodox celebrate Christians on the night of 6-7 of January to the Julian calendar.
1.3 CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN ENGLAND AND RUSSIA
Christmas Englishmen are very serious. They like their traditions very much. Christmas celebrations are 3 days in England: Christmas Eve, Christmas and Christmas Day gift. A week before the holiday house thoroughly cleaned and rubbed up windows shine. On the door of every house we can see a green wreath, colored bulbs, garland. Englishmen begin to prepare for the celebration almost a month.
In Christmas morning happy kids go down to the living room there is the Christmas tree, Christmas stockings or socks are welcome gifts from Santa Claus.
On this day, everyone gathers in the parental home at the table, give each other gifts and exchange the cards.
The tradition of giving gifts is characteristic for many countries. Because it is based on the fact of presenting gifts the wise men to Jesus Christ. According to this tradition we should not leave our loving persons, relatives without gifts.
In our country this tradition is not observed although the custom of giving gifts is preserved. In England there is a special day: the Day of Giving. Today Christmas dinner at the British assumes such traditional dishes like stuffed turkey and, of course, the pudding.
The British celebrate Christmas before the New Year and it is a great holiday gift celebration meeting. So they are carefully prepared for it.
In our country the New Year is the most favorite holiday. It is celebrated more widely than Christmas. Christmas Day was the weekend in Russia since 1991. Many believers attend worship in the temples and churches.
In Russia a lot of traditions have been forgotten associated with the Christmas celebration. Housekeepings do not prepare the special food. Although it is believed that the traditional Christmas dish the Christmas goose with apples.
In Russia Christmas is colorful folk customs. We have popular Christmas divination especially among girls.
Children and youth walk from house to house with songs and good wishes. Weak young people began to walk around the village, sang carols and glorifying the holy holiday. Usually they go at all the houses in order and give the whole theatrical performance. Hosts gift to sweets “Kolyada”. Now this custom is not widely spread but it can still be found in rural areas.
A long tradition of decorating evergreen tree beauty came to us from Germany. It is transmitted to many countries. There are many toys and balls, garlands and tinsel. It welcomed children from many countries. In all cities we can see the Christmas trees in the squares.
The Christmas tradition is celebrated it by our family and those nations England and Russia. We believe there is the most important traditions for the celebration of Christmas.
PART 2. STUDY OF CHRISTMAS
We conducted a survey in the 5-11classes. These were 50 students. All people celebrate holidays.
We asked some questions:
We have following answers:
We want to speak that all people like holidays. All people want to get gifts.
Now we know that New Year's traditions are much more than Christmas. Christmas holidays are celebrated with many folk customs but it is forgotten. I hope that the tradition will be reborn. The day began with the Divine Liturgy in the church. Then the celebration continued in the street. The kids go home to home. The adults sing and dance. All people eat a special food.
The tradition of Christmas celebration is similar in England and in Russia.
Conclusion
During the research we studied the history of the holiday, the general features of Christmas celebration. It was interesting to compare the tradition of celebrating in our country and Britain.
Our hypothesis is confirmed. We have some general traditions to celebrate this holiday.
As a result, we came to the conclusion:
1. Christmas is a family holiday in Russia and in England. The whole family gathers for the holiday table.
2. It's the atmosphere of joy, surprises, gifts.
3. In this day people celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
We celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January and the British is on the 25th of December. We have this holiday because it is very important for us. This is the day all the people show care, love, engaged in charity.
