The United States of America is a federation of 50 states and one district — District of Columbia. The capital city is Washington D.C. Each state is different from all the others. It has its own state government, laws, education, taxes and customs.

The USA Constitution establishes a stronger federal government empowered to collect taxes, conduct diplomacy, maintain armed forces, and regulate foreign trade and commerce among the states, but most importantly, it establishes the principle of a balance of power.

There are three branches of power in the USA: legislative, executive, and judicial. They are presented on the federal level and on the level of local government.

Every state has its own capital, elected governor, legislative assembly, the court system, and even the Constitution. Although local laws cannot contradict federal ones, states have great autonomy.

The Congress consisting of House of Representatives and the Senate performs federal legislative power. People elect not only members of House of Representatives, but also members of the Senate. A bill becomes a law only after the debates in House of Representatives, the discussion in the Senate and the President’s approval.

The President and the Government form executive power. The head of the USA is elected for four years by indirect voting: each state determines its Electoral College, and then electors choose the President. The US President - Joseph Robinette Biden

Taking into account people’s opinion, they support a candidate from one of the main parties: Democratic or Republican. The President is an extremely important figure: he commands the army, issues orders, presents the country in the global political arena, etc.

The highest instance of judicial power is Supreme Court considering cases tied with international relations, the USA ambassadors, states’ disagreements, etc. The President appoints nine members of Supreme Court for life.
