Origin of sharks. Most scientists agree that sharks descended from an ancient group of aquatic animals called gibods ( gibodonts ). These toothy predators, reaching a length of 2.5 m, lived in the seas and even fresh waters 320-360 million years ago. The choice of scientists in favor of gibods was not accidental - they looked like modern sharks. The main difference between gibods and sharks is the presence of a bony skeleton, thanks to which scientists were able to study gibods more thoroughly than primitive sharks, whose cartilage was destroyed by time. Cladoselachia - the first shark .
