1. What are aphorisms and what is their purpose? The definition of the word "Aphorism" is as follows: "Aphorism is a clear and complete thought, which has a deep meaning. It is easy to remember and is used many times by people in everyday life. " The main differences between aphorisms and products of folk art, such as proverbs or phraseological units, are: 1. The presence of the author. An aphorism is the thought of a particular author, into which he laid his meaning. 2. Brevity. Quite often, aphorisms consist of a small number of words, so they are easy to understand and remember. 3. Meaning. The most important thing in all aphorisms is the embedded meaning. Only he turns the usual saying of the author into a wise thought, which is used in the everyday speech of many people even centuries after it was written. It is the brevity and deep meaning that distinguish aphorisms from everything else. But what do they carry in themselves? Aphorisms are needed to express thoughts in a more concise and concise form that will be understandable to everyone.

2.Aphorisms of English writers and their use. You can examine the use of aphorisms in speech with the help of five great English writers : William Shakespeare , Oscar Wilde , Walter Scott , Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens . Their aphorisms are used not only in English , but also in many other languages of the world .

2.1 Shakespeare's aphorisms. William Shakespeare is not for nothing considered one of the greatest playwrights not only in England , but also in the world . His works are relevant to this day and are still interesting to read , and plays continue to be staged in theaters around the world . There is no doubt that such a great playwright left behind a large number of quotes and aphorisms . " Hamlet ", " Othello ", " King Lear " and many other works - all this is a real treasure trove of expressions . William Shakespeare greatly enriched the English language with his aphorisms , therefore they are known to the largest number of people and they can perfectly diversify speech , since they themselves are quite diverse .
Слайд 11
Here are some examples of Shakespeare's aphorisms : " Mother nature is wise , but her son is brainless ." - " The Taming of the Shrew " " Give everything a meaning , but only silently ." - " Hamlet " " Then only two keep the secret , when one of them does not know it ." - " Romeo and Juliet " “ Silence is not at all a sign of soullessness . Thunders only what is empty from the inside . " - " King Lear " " To catch happiness , you have to be able to run ." - " King Lear " "Mother nature is wise, but her son is brainless." - "The Taming of the Shrew" "Give everything a meaning, but only silently." - "Hamlet" "Then only two keep the secret, when one of them does not know it." - "Romeo and Juliet" “Silence is not at all a sign of soullessness. Thund ers only what is empty from the inside. " - "King Lear"

From these examples , one can understand how diverse Shakespeare's aphorisms are . They have thoughts about everything , therefore they are known and used in speech all over the world .

2.2 Aphorisms of Oscar Wilde Oscar Wilde's contemporaries consider him one of the best writers . He was the most famous playwright of the late 19th century . Oscar hated boredom , vulgarity and monotonous monotony , and tried to hide from them in the art that he idolized . In him he saw a refuge from all the strife and horrors of the world . The main popularity and fame came to Wilde after the work " The Picture of Dorian Gray ", which is still studied in schools around the world . Here you can find almost as many quotes and aphorisms as in Hamlet and other works of Shakespeare . Oscar Wilde made no less a contribution to the language than other writers . His sharp statements and jokes immediately became quotes and went to the masses .

Here are some examples of Oscar Wilde's aphorisms: “That there is a cynic. A cynic is a person who knows the value of everything and does not value anything. " - "The Picture of Dorian Grey" "Self-love is the beginning of a love affair that lasts a lifetime." - "Ideal husband" "You need to know the great secret of life: heal the soul with sensations, and let the soul heal the sensations." - "The Picture of Dorian Grey" "We can't stand people with the same handicaps as ours." - "The Picture of Dorian Grey" "The only way to get rid of temptation is to succumb to it." - "The Picture of Dorian Grey" “When a person is happy, he is always good. But good people are not always happy. " - "The Picture of Dorian Grey"

As can be understood from these examples, Oscar Wilde's aphorisms are not as diverse in themes as those of Shakespeare, but they are also very well written.
Слайд 16
2.3 Aphorisms of Walter Scott Walter Scott actually stood at the origins of the historical novel as a genre in literature . He did not consider writing to be his main income and shunned popularity . He perceived writing as a hobby and nothing more , but his books became bestsellers , and later many subsequent great writers ( for example , Arthur Koran Doyle , Byron and Jane Austen ) relied on his work in their careers . Scott's works are written in a unique language - this makes aphorisms and quotes from his works special , so they are also often used along with other writers .

Here are some examples of Walter Scott's aphorisms: "The closer you are to the church, the further you are from the Lord God." - "Ivanhoe" "The trial is always very fast if the judge has pronounced a judgment in advance." - "Ivanhoe" "Need is the mother of courage." - "Quentin Dorward" "It happens that a bad tree bears good fruit, and bad times do not only give rise to evil." - "Ivanhoe" "Alas, now I know that the spectacle of victory is even worse than the spectacle of battle." - "Ivanhoe" "We all tend to blame the law if it causes us grief." - “Collected works in eight volumes. Volume 5. Edinburgh Dungeon " "I do not know of a better subject for ridicule than the stupidity of smart people." - "Quentin Dorward" "The danger you foresee is no longer a danger." - "Quentin Dorward" "It is unwise to look back when you have to go forward." - "Richard the Lionheart"
Слайд 18
Walter Scott's aphorisms are not very diverse in topics, but they are well written, therefore they diversify speech well.
Слайд 19
Conclusion In the course of this work, we found out how and in what situations it is possible to use the aphorisms of English writers. From this we see that the aphorisms of English writers can perfectly help in the diversity of their speech. For example, the aphorisms of Shakespeare are diverse and fit well in almost any conversation, or only in some cases, like Oscar Wilde, but there are simply very well written ones that can diversify the sound of their own speech, like Walter Scott. Of course, these are far from all the aphorisms of far from all authors that can be cited as an example, but even on these one can understand all the beauty and variety of aphorisms by English authors that were written centuries ago, but are still relevant and useful even today.
