Сценарий праздника
Ведущий: Greetings, travelers. Today, we celebrate a magnificent holiday -Christmas.
The origins of this holiday take place in time of Apostles. In apostolic decrees it is said: “Keep the days of holiday, my brothers, but most important, the day of Christ’s birth, on 25 day of the ninth month” (desembri). “Celebrate the day of Christ’s birth, because it is a blessing, given to us by The Virgin Mary.” The first day of celebrating Christmas was recorded in Rome, 25 of December, 336 year A.D.
We still celebrate it, but some traditions have changed in different countries. Today, we will visit them and find out, how this day is celebrated in different corners of the world.
The first country that we are going to visit is very conservative and loyal to its traditions. Maybe, somebody knows, what this country is? (England)
- Right, it is England.
England
In England, the New Year is not as widely or as enthusiastically observed as Christmas. Some people ignore it completely and go to bed at the same time as usual on New Year's Eve. Many others, however, do celebrate it in one way or another, the type of celebration varying very much according to the local custom, family tradition and personal taste.
The most common type of celebration is a New Year party, either a family party or one arranged by a group of young people. This usually begins at about eight o'clock and goes on until the early hours of the morning. Слайд 4. There is a lot of drinking, mainly beer, wine, gin and whisky; sometimes the hosts make a big bowl of punch which consists of wine, spirits, fruit juice and water in varying proportions. Слайд 5. There is usually a buffet supper of cold meat, pies, sandwiches, savouries, cakes and biscuits.
Видео. Now we will watch the New Year's fireworks in England.
At midnight the wireless is turned on, so that everyone can hear the chimes of Big Ben, and on the hour a toasts and Auld Lang Syne (a song by Robert Burns) is sung. (песню найти видео вставить в презентацию) Then the party goes on.
Another popular way of celebrating the New Year is to go to a New Year's dance. Most hotels and dance halls hold a special dance on New Year's Eve. The hall is decorated, there are several different bands and the atmosphere is very gay.
The most famous celebration is in London round the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus where crowds gather and sing and welcome the New Year. In Trafalgar Square there is also a big crowd and someone usually falls into the fountain.
Ведущий: Very interesting and amusing country. It is opened for the world but never forgets its traditions. The next country on our road is northward. It is famous for its bagpipes and check Skirts-Scotland.
Scotland
The New Year traditions of Scotland are saturated with a special flavor of this country. It turns out that the Scots do not celebrate the Happy New Year, but Hogmanay (Hogmanay or Hogmanay). Many of its customs seem amazing and original, because Hogmanay is not the traditional celebration of the New Year that we are used to.
In Scotland, New Year's traditions are strictly observed up to the present day. Unlike other European countries, the New Year is celebrated here on an even bigger scale than Christmas. And this is not accidental. It was like this. Back in 1651, the church simply forbade celebrating Christmas. The common people did not understand the religious background of the holiday and reveled to death. And since no one wanted to stay without a holiday after the ban, the locals directed all their efforts to meet the New Year. And so it happened.
It is characteristic that Hogmanay is the longest New Year's holiday in Europe. It lasts from December 31 to January 3 inclusive. Since ancient times, the Scots strictly carry out their New Year traditions and customs, which, by the way, are very original and funny.
New Year's traditions in Scotland
"The rite of admission".
Hogmanay is welcomed by the whole family. Family members gather around the fireplace waiting for the clock to strike. The head of the family opens the front door and holds it open while the clock counts down the last minutes of the year. It is believed that the old year thus leaves the dwelling, and the new one, on the contrary, enters the open door.
"First footing" or "first foot in the house".
It is very important that the first guest is necessarily a man with dark hair, and preferably a burning brunette. According to legend, it is he who will bring good luck to the house in the coming year. And he should also bring a coal with him as a gift and throw it into the fireplace with wishes that the fire in this hearth burned brighter. And it would be good to add other gifts to the coal: money, goodies, for some reason salt and "whiskey". The Scots believe in this tradition so much that they often hire a dark-haired man to go around the house after the New Year. This "messenger of fate" has every right to kiss the girl who opened the door to him. So, the Scots for "jokes" specially slip an old woman to the brunette to see how he will get out of this situation. And they say the Scots have no sense of humor!
Hogmanay is a fire festival.
Hogmanay is considered a festival of fire, which should burn all the bad things in the outgoing year. For the same purpose, a burning barrel with tar or tar is launched on New Year's Eve, it rolls through the streets, as if lighting the way for the new year and burning all the bad things that happened in the old year. It is customary to arrange a torchlight procession and launch fireworks, again, so that Hogmanay sees the road and, God forbid, does not lose his way.
Performance of a New Year's song.
The performance of a New Year's song, by the way, is another Scottish tradition. And it consists in this. Here, after the chimes strike, they perform not the national anthem, as is customary, for example, in our country, but a song based on the poems of the national poet Robert Burns "For Auld Lang Syne" ("Good Old Time"). On New Year's Eve, Scottish kids go home to "caroling", that is, they sing, read poetry, for which they receive treats.
Festive table.
The festive table is a symbol of wealth, the richer the table, the correspondingly higher the prosperity in the family. Therefore, to arrange a "mountain feast" for a Scot is almost a matter of honor. The king of the table is a baked or boiled goose. Be sure to have braised Brussels sprouts, apples in dough, oatcakes, traditional pudding, various pies and pies on the table. And by all means - a round sand cake decorated with a Scottish cross, heather, nuts and marzipan figures. Of the drinks on the table - champagne, punch and, of course, Scotch whiskey. Otherwise it wouldn't be Scotland!
In this regard, another medieval Scottish tradition is recalled. Drink ale with spices from a cup on New Year's Eve. The cup was passed around from seniors to juniors. The tradition is alive to this day, but the cups have been replaced with mugs, with which they go out into the streets and treat passers-by with ale.
Many seasoned travelers advise to celebrate the New Year in Scotland at least once in their lives. And it doesn't matter what it's called - Hogmanay, or New Year!
Ведущий: Scotland enjoys celebrating the beginning of a new year and its traditions are very original and engaging. But we have to visit another place, full of legends about scary giants and mysterious elves, hiding treasures - Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland
The Irish celebrate the New Year in a very fun and massive way. A large spruce tree is installed on the main square of a large or small settlement, near which the main festivities take place. Long before midnight, locals and guests of the country gather in the city center. People dance, sing, organize fairs and concerts on the streets, and the night from December 31 to January 1 is the most long-awaited and joyful in the whole year.
According to custom, the doors in the houses are open wide, so the Irish let grief, troubles and adversities out of their homes and allow luck, love, happiness and prosperity to settle in their house. After all the New Year's citywide events, the Irish go home and continue to celebrate the holiday together with their relatives and friends. All those gathered light candles and ring special bells, such a pagan tradition is aimed at attracting the attention of higher forces that will not leave the family in trouble.
The table, according to tradition, should be rich and elegantly decorated, as according to ancient beliefs it promises a comfortable and fruitful year.
The national treat is "sid cake" - a cupcake seasoned with cumin. Before the start of the winter holidays, the Irish prepare products for the observance of the rite called "three puddings". Each of them is a symbol of Christmas, New Year and Epiphany and they are served one at a time on the corresponding day. Plum pudding is considered the main dish of the Christmas table. It consists of 13 ingredients that symbolize Christ with His disciples.
Fireworks are banned in the country, and even for a small firecracker you can get a prison sentence.
Ведущий: It is so touching, the way how people there say goodbye to the old year. Let’s move to the next place. And we are getting to the fans of loud parties in the New World, the USA.
Christmas in America
Christmas is one of the most beloved and important holidays for Americans. At this time, the entire territory of America resembles a real fairy tale. Great importance is attached to design of houses from the outside. Some houses during the Christmas period can be called a work of art.
Traditions and customs
Preparation for Christmas begins after Thanksgiving Day, which is celebrated at the end of November (the last Thursday of the month). The sales season begins: everyone is buying Christmas trees, preparing gifts; decorating houses and streets.
Traditionally, Christmas in America is celebrated on December 25. This is a national holiday, so many government offices, shops, cafes and many others do not work during this period, although conditions vary from state to state.
One of the brightest Christmas traditions is a family dinner on the eve of the holiday (Christmas Eve), which is held on December 24. All the relatives gather at the table. Of course, everyone exchanges gifts. There is even such a thing as "Secret Santa. The essence of this ceremony is that everyone takes one piece of paper out of the hat in turn, i.e. a lot is drawn, which determines who gives a gift to whom. At the same time, the name of "Santa" remains a secret for what gets a present.
Christmas carols (hymns) are widespread in America. You may have heard some of them. The most popular hymns are "Hark the Herald Angels Sing", "Silent Night". Sometimes on the streets on Christmas Eve you can meet a choir singing Christmas songs. Children dressed in angelic costumes sing Christmas carols, praise God and the birth of his son Jesus.
How to decorate houses in America for Christmas?
In the USA, it is customary to decorate houses inside and outside. A cozy festive atmosphere is created on the streets. Americans do not skimp on the illumination of houses, thanks to which the streets glow with colorful lights.
Santa figures with his reindeer team are displayed on the lawn in front of the house. An interesting fact, but previously a horse served as a means of transportation for him. Deer were first "invented" in the work of Clement Moore "The Night before Christmas".
For decoration, figures of snowmen, bears, angels, garlands, Christmas toys, Christmas wreaths, bells are used. Here they are not afraid to show imagination, and they give themselves to this occupation with all their heart.
Of course, the main Christmas decoration inside the house is the Christmas Tree. The custom of decorating the Christmas tree came from Germany. The first written mention of it dates back to the 16th century. In the German city of Strasbourg, people from poor and rich families used colored paper, fruits, and even sweets as decorations.
And of course, speaking of American Christmas, it is impossible not to mention Christmas stockings, or rather bags in the form of stockings, which are traditionally hung on the fireplace. It is believed that Santa Claus, going down the pipe into the house, necessarily puts gifts in them.
What is being prepared for Christmas in America
The main dessert of the holiday is Fruitcake. Many housewives bake a cake with nuts, dried fruits and candied fruits soaked in rum and syrup especially for Christmas. Interestingly, another meaning of the word Fruitcake is "weirdo" or "crazy". So there are a lot of jokes related to this delicacy.
It is impossible not to mention the "gingerbread men". This dessert is widely known all over the world, and is a culinary symbol of Christmas. When preparing this cookie, ginger is added, and they are decorated with icing on top. For the first time such edible figurines appeared at the court of Queen Elizabeth I, and at the same time the "little men" were outwardly similar to some of her important guests.
A drink for Christmas should be warming. Therefore, mainly hot chocolate or cocoa is prepared. But eggnog, a sweet drink based on raw chicken eggs and milk, is considered truly traditional. Of the other options – wine, punch, tea.
Symbols of Christmas in America
One of the most important symbols of Christmas is Santa Claus, who is known far beyond the borders of the country. During the holiday, about 20 thousand people work in the country. Santa Claus.
For many, this fairy-tale character is associated with a good-natured old man dressed in a red suit with a cap, and having a thick white beard. His prototype was St. Nicholas, who is revered in Europe (in particular, in Germany), and in whose honor a Catholic church holiday was approved.
Another symbol is a red and white lollipop in the form of the letter J. There are several versions of its appearance. Some believe that J is the first letter of the name Jesus. Others believe that such an unusual shape of candy symbolizes the shape of the staffs of shepherds who first came to visit the newborn baby.
The star on the Christmas tree also symbolizes the birth of Jesus, and reminds of the star of Bethlehem, which rose at the time of his birth.
Ведущий: We finish our travel to the north-west and go to the opposing point of the Earth. This country has the most unusual animal world – Australia.
Australia
In Australia, Christmas comes in the middle of the summer holidays! Children have their summer holidays from early to mid-December to early February.
People decorate their houses and gardens with Christmas Trees and Christmas lights. Australians also decorate their houses with bunches of 'Christmas Bush', a native Australian tree with small green leaves
In many towns and cities there are festivals and parades. In some places, there is a fireworks display too. When Santa gets to Australia, he gives the reindeer a rest and uses kangaroos or 'six white boomers' (a popular Australian Christmas song!). He also changes his clothes for less 'hot' ones!
On Christmas day children receive presents – they are in their stockings or under the Christmas tree. On Boxing Day most people go and visit their friends and often have barbecues at the beach.
Most families are at home together for Christmas and they eat the main meal at lunch time. Most people now have a cold Christmas dinner, or a barbecue. On Christmas Eve, fish-markets are often full of people because they want to buy seafood. Australians often have Christmas Crackers at Christmas meal times.
Now look at the slide and you will see fireworks in Sydney.
Ведущий: Because its location Australia meets the new year first. As much as in the other countries, people here like to celebrate in a group of friends. Now it’s time to find out if another country follows the same tradition – The New Zealand.
The New Zealand
In New Zealand, like its neighbor Australia, Christmas comes in the middle of the summer holidays.
Lots of people like to spend time of the beach, camping or at their Baches (holiday homes) for Christmas.
Many towns have a Santa parade with decorated floats (made by local businesses and churches, etc.), bands and marching teams. This can be any time from mid-November onwards and is really a commercial event but everyone enjoys them. As it's warm, Santa is sometimes seen wearing 'jandals' (New Zealand sandals) and he might even swaps his red top for a New Zealand 'All Blacks' rugby shirt!
Children in New Zealand leave out carrots for Santa's reindeer and Santa might be left a beer and some pineapple chunks!
In the main cities like Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton, there are big Christmas light shows and displays. There are big carol services throughout the country, even in small town, villages and rural areas.
New Zealand has some special carols of its own. These include 'Te Harinui', Christmas in New Zealand and A Kiwiana Christmas! These are sung at most carol services around the country.
Many people have a Christmas Tree in their homes and decorate it like people in the USA or UK. Kiwis also have their own special Christmas Tree, the Pōhutukawa. It can grow to be a very large tree and has bright red flowers which are popular decorations and also feature on Christmas cards. It's been associated with Christmas since the mid-1800s. The Pōhutukawa is also important in Maori culture. Most Pōhutukawa grow on the North Island where they flower from mid-December until around the 2nd week of January (some do grow on the South Island and flower a later). The earlier it flowers, the hotter the summer is meant to be; and the longer it flowers, the longer summer will be!
Many New Zealanders have a barbecue for Christmas lunch and this is becoming more popular. The food cooked on the barbecue is often ham slices or even venison or some other kind of exotic meat. Shrimps and other fish are also barbecued. White bait fritters are also popular. It's common to have Christmas Crackers on the Christmas dinner table.
Desserts are also very popular! Many still have a hot fruit pudding with custard and ice cream but cold desserts are popular. These include pavlova and whipped cream, meringues, cold fruit salad, jelly and ice cream. Drinks will include a range of soft drinks. Those who like it often over do the alcoholic drinks too. Here's a recipe for pavlova.
People from New Zealand have an English type Christmas meal in the middle of June (New Zealand's mid-winter)! This meal will often be hot food such as roast chicken, roast lamb, cold ham, hot roast vegetables such as potatoes, pumpkin, sweet potato (New Zealand has its own sweet potato called a Kumara), and other root vegetables and also greens such as peas. 'Mid-winter Christmas' meals in June or July are becoming more popular in businesses and clubs as a way of spending some time together.
People open their presents on Christmas Day once the whole family is all together. This is usually before the Christmas lunch.
In the Māori language, Santa Claus is called Hana Kōkō!
One popular present for Christmas in New Zealand are 'jandals'. These are flip-flops/thing sandals - the name 'jandals' comes from combining the two words 'Japanese Sandals'. They've been popular in New Zealand since the late 1950s.
In the Māori language Happy/Merry Christmas is 'Meri Kirihimete'.
Ведущий: Our travel has come to an end. We learnt so many traditions of, at first glance, an ordinary holiday. Despite our differences, we all like to meet the new year with our family and friends.
