The total length of the Russian borders is 60,932 km . Of these, 22,125 km are land borders (including 7616 km along rivers and lakes ). The length of Russia's Maritime borders is 38,807 km . It is washed by the waters of 3 oceans and 12 seas.

The Navy of the USSR developed as a single complex, in 60-80for years, the sea transport system of the Soviet Union had 70 sea trade ports and 40 trade points. All of them participated in cargo transshipment and were an important link between the Navy and other modes of transport in the Country .

After the collapse of the USSR in 1991 out of the total number of ships 1745 – Russia eceived 790 , out of 17 shipping companies – 10 . In 1992, the Department of Maritime transport was created as part of the Ministry of transport of ussia and the process of converting shipping companies into joint-stock companies began .The larges Transport holding was Sovcomflot , which has a controlling stake in the state.

In 2017 Sovcomflot's fleet consisted of : 123 tankers, 13 gas carriers , 12 specialized vessels and 2 dry cargo ships . Russia is the only country in the world that has a nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet. The company is engaged in the operation and maintenance of Icebreakers . Underwater forces The Russian Navy consists of 13 nuclear submarines with ballistic missiles, 27 nuclear submarines with missile and torpedo weapons, 19 diesel submarines, 8 special-purpose nuclear submarines and 1 special-purpose diesel submarine .

Surface forces The Russian Navy consists of 33 large combat surface ships of the 1st and 2 nd ranks , more than 100 small combat surface ships and boats, including landing craft, about 60 minesweepers, 21 landing ships and 2 training ships.
