One of the most unique places in Lyskovsky district is Olenina mountain, its flat top was occupied by a wooden fortress in the period from the XIV to the XVII centuries, which played the role of the outpost о n the eastern broader of the Russian state. The fortress had the same huge perimeter as Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin did and was reinforced by ten towers including two gate-towers that was the place the history of our town started with. Though the first references to Lyskovo dates back to 1410, numerous excavations evidence that earlier in the XII-XIII centuries a settlement called Sundovit was located there. In the XVI century the road from Nizhniy Novgorod to Kazan run on the top of Olenina mountain, and the army of Ivan the Terrible went through Lyskovo to conquest Kazan. It’s interesting to know, that when the fortress was built, three rivers curved around the base of the mountain and one of them was the Volga, nowadays the Volga flows about 5 kilometers to the north of the original channel . S urprisingly, 400 million years ago the Devonian Sea stretched on the territory from present Smolenck to the Urals. Later it went deep underground. Nowadays, to get salt mineral-rich water from that sea is very expensive and laborious. But we are lucky because in our area there are several salt springs and one of them is at the base of Olenina mountain. Some people use the water for medicinal purposes, others for salting cucumbers. Zheltovodsky Makaryev Monastery of the Holy Trinity was founded by the missionary Saint Macarius in the early 15th century. Many famous people visited this convent such as Peter I, Catherine II , even V.V. Putin and D.A. Medvedev, Nikon and Avvakum emerged from the monastery. In 1666, Patriarch Macarius of Artioch named it as "the second Jerusalem". In 1928-1929, the convent was used as an orphanage, during World War it was used as a military hospital, and in 1943 the monastery was transferred to the Lyskovo College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine. Nowadays Zheltovodsky Makaryev Monastery of the Holy Trinity is very popular all over the world and it is undergoing a revival. The second Jerusalem
