History Moscow University became the first secular higher education institution in Russia. Over the 265 years of its existence, he moved to various buildings on the territory of Moscow several times, changed the charter. Students and teachers participated in revolutions and wars, held gatherings and strikes. Read about how Mikhail Lomonosov and Ivan Shuvalov drew up the university’s project, what faculties worked in it and what happened to university property during the Patriotic War of 1812, read in the material of the Culture.RF portal. At the beginning of the XVIII century, all educational institutions that existed in Russia were associated with the church. Primary education was received at schools attached to churches or monasteries, and higher education was received at the Slavic-Greek-Latin and Kiev- Mohyla academies. They studied Latin, philosophy, and theology. Under Peter I, secular state schools appeared in Moscow and St. Petersburg, which trained the military, doctors and engineers. The first private educational institutions and schools at factories also opened. On February 2, 1724, Peter I issued a decree establishing the "Academy of Sciences and Curious Arts" in St. Petersburg. Two years later, the Academic University, the first secular higher educational institution, was opened at it. The professors invited from Germany taught in it, and lectured in German and Latin. The educational program was constantly changing, and for gifted students they made individual plans. The best students of the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy and other theological educational institutions were transferred to the new university. So scientists Mikhail Lomonosov and Dmitry Vinogradov got there. Education at the university could be received by representatives of any class. But the university did not enjoy popularity: its graduates were not supposed to have ranks and privileges for the service. Therefore, nobles more often gave their children to military schools. By the middle of the 18th century the land gentry corps and the sea gentry corps were created. They taught military and engineering sciences, art, modern European languages, among which were Polish, Italian and French.
