Основатель города Peter I the Great ( Pyotr Alexeyevich ; may 30 (June 9), 1672 — January 28 (February 8), 1725) was Tsar of Moscow of the Romanov dynasty (from 1682) and first Emperor of Russia (1721). In Russian historiography is considered one of the most prominent public figures that determined the direction of Russia's development in the eighteenth century.

Река Нева Neva — a river in Russia, flowing through the territory of the Leningrad region and St. Petersburg, connecting lake Ladoga with the Neva Bay of the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic sea.The length of 74 km, the area of its own pool of 5 thousand km2. Neva is the only river flowing from lake Ladoga. On the banks of the Neva river there are four cities of Shlisselburg , Kirovsk and Otradnoye , Saint-Petersburg and dozens of other settlements.

Петропавловская крепость Is the historical core of the city, originally the fortress was called Sankt- Piter - burh , founded on 16 (27) may, 1703 according to the plan of Peter I to the architect De Lantsberg : 6 bastions connected by curtains, 2 Ravelin , Kronverk , originally wooden, 30 — 40-ies and 80-ies of the XVIII century dressed stone.

Медный всадник Bronze horseman — monument to Peter I on Senate square in St. Petersburg. The monument got its name thanks to the famous poem by Alexander Pushkin, but actually made of bronze.

Сфинксы Sphinxes on the University embankment about 3.5 thousand years. Carved from syenite , they stood at the entrance to a majestic temple built in Egypt near Thebes to Pharaoh Amenhotep III. The heads of the sphinxes are portrait images of this Pharaoh. Headdresses of the sphinxes — two — tier tiara testified that Amenhotep III was the ruler of two kingdoms of Upper and Lower Egypt. Unfortunately, Sphynx repulsed chins and covering their false beards. When loading one of the sphinxes broke the ropes and fell, smashing to pieces the mast and the side of the ship. On the face of the Sphinx has remained a deep scar from a broken rope.

Исаакиевский собор St. Isaac's Cathedral, the main Church in St. PETERSBURG. in the name of Isaac Dalmata . (whose memory is honored on the day of birth of Peter V.), started construction 1768 and completed 1802. In 1817 after the contest approved the project of a new Church architect Montferrand , and 1858 the Cathedral is completed.

Русский музей The state Russian Museum was established in St. Petersburg by Decree of Emperor Nicholas II in 1895 and opened to the public 7(19) March 1898 and became the first in Russia state Museum of Russian fine art. In 1992 the decree of the President of the Russian Federation related to valuable objects of cultural heritage of the peoples of Russia.

Александро-Невская Лавра First mentioned in documents in July 1710, when Peter I, examining the place near the Black river (now the Monastyrka river), ordered to build here the Alexander Nevsky monastery on the supposed site of the victory in 1240 troops of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky over the Swedes in the Neva battle.The official founding date — the day of the consecration of the first wooden Church of the Annunciation — March 25, 1713.
