The history of creation. "Roadside picnic" is a fantastic story of brothers Strugatsky , first published in 1972. The story is the leader among the other works of authors by number of translations into foreign languages and publications outside the former Soviet Union. As of 2003, Boris Strugatsky counted 55 editions of "Picnic" in 22 countries .

English novel published in translation, Antonina W. Bouis . Preface to the first American edition (MacMillan Publishing Co., Inc , New York, 1977) was written by Theodore Sturgeon. Afterword to the German edition of 1977 was written by S. LEM, who praised the work . Based on the novel filmed released in 1979 Andrei Tarkovsky film "Stalker". In 2000, the USA has announced intentions to put a new big-budget adaptation.

The term "Stalker" steadily entered the Russian language and, as the authors say, became the most popular of them set up neologisms. The action of the novel takes place on Earth, presumably in the 1970-ies in the town of Harmont , invented in an English speaking country.Approximately 13 years before the beginning described in the book events in several places on the globe occurs six "zones" — areas in which begin to happen strange phenomena that violate known laws of physics. Zones are located along a smooth line on the surface of the Earth, the projection of the so-called Pilman radiant is a point lying on the straight line connecting the Earth and Deneb. It quickly became clear that people and animals live in Zones can't, and the entire population was evacuated from them. The area was fenced under strict protection and officially became the subject of careful scientific study.
