A person who frequently goes to the theatre is called a theatre-goer. There are a lot of people who love and visit different kinds of theatres: drama, variety, puppet, musical theatres, opera houses and ballets. The main part of each theatre is an auditorium that can hold different number of seats. It has a stage - a platform on which plays are performed before an audience. A sunken area at the front of a theatre where [musicians sit is known as an orchestra pit. Front orchestra seats are called stalls or ground-floor seats. If a theatre is very big there can be orchestra stalls, centre stalls and rear stalls and the pit be-hind them. Some auditoriums have special compartments for a small group of spectators, which are called boxes.

The dress-circle is the first or lowest tier of seats in a theatre. The balcony and the gallery ("gods") are situated higher. As for me, I prefer drama to all other theatres, hut I like opera and variety too. I don't go to the theatre very often. When I decide to visit a theatre. I usually book tickets beforehand. The best seats in the theatre are in the stalls, in the dress circle, and the upper circle. Boxes, of course are the most ex pensive.
Слайд 5
I like to sit in the dress circle, because we can see the stage very well from there and the tickets are not very expensive, besides. I like to see both classic and modern plays by Russian and foreign playwrights. I saw, for example, "The Cherry Orchard", "The Three Sisters" by Chekhov, and several dramas by Ostrovsky. Several years ago I saw "Pygmalion" by Bernard Saw and "Hamlet" by Shakespeare. I liked the plays very much.
Слайд 6
I remember when we came to the theatre to see "Hamlet" we saw a sign at the entrance saying "House Full". Many people were standing at lie theatre asking for an extra ticket. We left our coats in the cloak-room and bought a programme from the usher. We wanted to know what the cast was. Boxes, dress-circles and balconies were over-crowded. The actors played very well. We liked the performance, it was a great success with the public.

William Shakespeare Most historians agree that William Shakespeare -actor, playwright and poet - was a single person, of whose life and work there is considerable historical evidence. Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, in April 1564, the son of John Shakespeare, a glove-maker, and of Mary Arden. As the son of a prominent town official, William Shakespeare probably attended the Stratford grammar school, which provided an intensive education in Latin grammar and literature. There is no evidence, that his formal education extended beyond this.

Shakespeare's dramatic works can be divided into tragedies (Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, King Lear, Hamlet, Othello, etc), comedies (A Midsummer Night s Dream, Much Ado about Nothing, Taming of the Shrew, Twelfth Night, etc), and histories (Richard III, Richard II, Henry VI, etc).

Various documents recording lege al affairs and commercial transactions show that Shakespeare grew rich nough during his stay in London to buy property in Blackfiiars, London and own the second-largest house in Stratford, New Place.

William Shakespeare is considered by many to have been the greatest writer the English language has ever known. As a playwright, he wrote not only some of the most powerful tragedies, but also many of the funniest comedies ever to appear on an English stage. He also wrote 154 sonnets and several major poems, some of which are considered to be the most brilliant pieces of English literature ever written, because of Shakespeare's ability to rise beyond the narrative and describe the innermost and the most profound aspects of the human nature. He is believed to have written most of his works in 1585-1610, although the exact dates and chronology of the plays attributed to him are not accurately known.

Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, eight years his senior. After his marriage, William Shakespeare left few traces in the historical record until he appeared on the London literary scene. Shakespeare became an actor, writer and finally part-owner of an acting company known as The Lord Chamberlain's Men - the company took its name, like others of the period, from its aristocratic sponsor, the Lord Chamberlain. The group became popular enough that after the death of Elizabeth I and the coronation of James I of England, the new monarch adopted the company and it became known as The King's Men.

Shakespeare died in 1616. He is buried in Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon. His grave carries his well-known epitaph: Good friend, for Jesus' sake forbear, To dig the dust enclosed here. Blest be the man that spares these stones, But cursed be he that moves my bones. Popular legend claims that unpublished works by Shakespeare may lie inside his tomb, but no one has ever verified these claims, perhaps for fear of the curse included in the quoted epitaph.
