Introduction
We live in extraordinary times, and the world faces challenges that can seem overwhelming or even insurmountable. Climate change continues unchecked. Inequality has soared. Politics becomes ever more polarized. We see a resurgence of political ideologies in parts of the world that have not been such a threat since the end of World War II. At the same time, we have the largest migration crisis in human history.
An estimated 1 billion volunteers are freely giving their time to make a difference on the issues that affect them and their communities, often in the most difficult of circumstances.

Theoretical part
SIGNIFICANCE OF VOLUNTEERING
Volunteering is a universal social behaviour based on the desire of people to participate in change, rather than passively experience development processes. Volunteers promote ideas of solidarity, gratuitousness, equality and non-violence.
Principles of the volunteer movement:
- respect for the rights, dignity of a person, his national and cultural characteristics;
- promotion of a healthy lifestyle;
- friendly attitude towards everyone and always;
- compliance with laws.
Every day, volunteers organize themselves in communities around the world to address long-term economic, social and environmental problems that threaten community resilience, such as poor education, health, management, poverty and food insecurity. In cases where public support and social protection mechanisms are not available, volunteering becomes a basic survival strategy.
Volunteering is an activity aimed at providing free services to people.
GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP
Global citizenship is the idea that all people have rights and civic responsibilities that come with being a member of the world, with whole-world philosophy and sensibilities, rather than as a citizen of a particular nation or place. The idea is that one’s identity transcends geography or political borders and that responsibilities or rights are derived from membership in a broader class: "humanity". This does not mean that such a person denounces or waives their nationality or other, more local identities, but such identities are given "second place" to their membership in a global community
THE HISTORY OF THE VOLUNTEERING DEVELOPMENT IN EUROPE
The roots of IVS go back to just after the First World War when Service Civil International (SCI) was founded by an international group of Pacifists to further the aims of peace, justice and understanding in the world. Initiated by the Swiss Quaker Pierre Cérésole, the organisation’s purpose was to bring together volunteers from different countries, to provide a ‘voluntary service’ to local communities in need of support.
In 1920, Pierre Cérésole and Hubert Parris, a British Quaker, set up the first international voluntary project in Esnes, a French village that had suffered extensive
4
war damage. Major volunteer projects continued throughout the 1920’s offering aid and support to communities in need.
They set up the first international voluntary project in Britain in 1931. The goal was to help locals of Brynmawr. It attracted 41 volunteers from abroad, and 74 from the UK. From this, emerged the development of the International Voluntary Service for Peace. Led by Jean Inebnit, IVSP was now the British Branch of Service Civil International.
The voluntary work provided by IVS volunteers continued to grow throughout WW2, with specialist relief teams developed to tackle specific issues faced in wartime Britain.
During the Blitz, Volunteers gave support to struggling air-raid shelters and developed a range of health and social projects including an open Air Theatre to provide entertainment for evacuees. In Croydon, an area of London hit by violent bombings, volunteers worked to clear dangerous blitzed houses
Following on from the successes of IVS projects in Europe and the swelling number of volunteers, IVS teams began developing projects outside of Europe. The IVS Pioneers setup branches in India and across Africa.
By the 1960s, a long-term volunteering programme had been developed to assist developing countries by providing long-term skilled volunteers. Volunteers contributed to almost every aspect of development from education and health to planning and construction. Their role was to act as a catalyst for change and to contribute skills which were not available locally.
*International voluntary service
VOLUNTARY AS A GLOBAL TOOL FOR PRESERVING THE WORLD AND DEVELOPMENT
Europe is one of the most modern and richest continents in the world. But most countries still need help from international actors.
Volunteering promotes local action on social change and, in turn, supports behavioral change, challenging negative social attitudes.
The movement very quickly became popular both among young people and people of all ages. Gradually, more and more volunteer programs began to emerge and be implemented. The idea spread throughout the planet.
There are many short-term and long-term volunteer programs where you can change the world, make something worthwhile, and get an incredible experience. Participation is a good way to make new friends and make something useful.
Volunteering is not “the use of cheap labor” it is a program of social and cultural exchange.
5
By engaging yourself in one of the volunteer opportunities, you may be able to provide some relief in the following areas:
VOLUNTEERING DIRECTIONS
There are many ways for volunteers to help with some of these problems abroad. Whether you are passionate about women empowerment in Ireland, care for injured horses at a horse sanctuary in Spain or are eager to contribute to marine conservation in Greece or Italy, one of the volunteer programs in Europe will give you the chance to do exactly that.
Animal and wildlife conservation
There are quite a number of opportunities to work with animals and contribute to the conservation of precious wildlife. From horses in Spain to the conservation of wolves in Portugal and saving bears in Finland, the life on land portrays a variety of amazing animals. But not only does Europe convince animal lovers with its diversity on land - its oceans are filled with wonderful marine life such as dolphins, whales and sea turtles that can be admired on the islands of the Mediterranean.
One of the main problems Europe is facing when it comes to its animals and wildlife is its exploitation for economic purposes. This includes, for example, whaling, poaching of bears and mistreatment of horses. Additional threats are
The combination of all these threats has led to declining numbers of many animals, even to the point of near extinction. As a wildlife conservation volunteer abroad, you can support efforts to prevent this decline and rehabilitate native European species.
6
Support community services
If you want to immerse yourself in European culture and get in touch with the locals during your volunteer work abroad, a community program is a perfect opportunity. Community work calls for open, outgoing and empathetic volunteers that aren’t afraid of getting involved and can face realities.
Depending on what your skills and qualifications are, there are many different ways to help in a community development program abroad.
Some of them are:
Shortage of staff and geographical difficulties make it difficult for many students, especially in rural areas, to receive the education they deserve. As a teaching volunteer in Europe, you can support the staff in local school programs and support the progress of the children in the classroom by providing extra help and attention. You can also contribute by volunteering for afterschool programs where you help with teaching kids certain skills. Depending on the volunteer program you choose, there is a great variety of tasks you can do:
As a volunteer in Europe, you can join environmental programs to make a real difference in the effort to preserve the unique environment. Environmental programs abroad are focused on agriculture, conservation work, and marine conservation. All of these conservation programs are spread across the continent, so you will have several options to choose from.
7
Depending on the projects you will join, typical volunteer work might include:
Volunteer projects are distinguished by type of activity. The special encoding is often used for convenience:

TYPES OF VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS
Programs are paid and free. Paid ones provide for the purchase of tickets by a volunteer and the payment of certain administrative services during the execution of documents, while only meals and lodging are free. The second type of volunteer program assumes that the organizer fully assumes all costs, and the volunteer goes abroad for free.
Projects that require investments
Help exchange
“We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results.” - Henry Melville
Help exchange system has been popular with travellers from all over the world for many years.
Help exchange is not just gratuitous help, but the exchange of it, that is, in return for your work you get almost more than you give. You get free living in another country, diverse experiences and a lot of friends from all over the world. And all this in just a few hours a day of your free time! Volunteers are placed in families, where they are immersed in the language environment, learn the peculiarities of culture and life, and at the same time help with homework and work with children.
Virtually every country in the world has from one to several thousand projects with completely different types of assistance. Somewhere specialized experts are needed: doctors, veterinarians, builders, web developers, etc. But for the most part, the projects are designed for ordinary people with a wide range of knowledge and skills. Depending on the continent, country and region, people need different help.

Workcamp
A volunteer camp (workcamp) is a short-term social project, usually from 2 to 3 weeks in almost any country in the world. The project team consists of 10-20 volunteers from different countries. Participation in a volunteer camp is a unique opportunity to learn more about other countries and cultures, as well as to spend your time with benefit for yourself and those around you!
The goal of each volunteer camp is to help the country (city, village) to implement a project. They are especially popular in countries such as the USA, England, Germany, Spain, France, Finland, Switzerland. Students, university professors, people of various professions - quite prosperous and respectable, but
9
preferring to spend their holidays in active creation participate in volunteering. Volunteer camps are of a very different types: environmental (clearing forests, fields and rivers, planting trees), archaeological, restoration, maintenance, agricultural (working on farms and in the fields, helping to organize farmers' festivals), social (working with children, caring for sick and disabled) and others.
This usually involves joint work in rural or urban areas, which does not require any special skills. Locals often take part in projects. You can spend your free time relaxing, cooking and talking, as well as at events and excursions with other volunteers and the local community.
You must be prepared to live and work in a communal environment, where living conditions are often simple, and work can be stressful, but fun and rewarding.
The principle on which volunteers work is one: the project must be socially significant.
The working language of most projects is English, but there are also volunteer camps in the language of the host country, for example, in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Germany. The language level is not formally verified, but the average spoken English is comfortable, which will allow you to communicate with other volunteers and the local population without any particular problems.

Sudan Volunteers
The project, created in the UK, aims to raise the educational level of Sudanese children. Volunteers teach them English, while they themselves learn Arabic, get acquainted with the culture and customs of the people. Voluntary teachers and their assistants do not pay for shelter and food, receive a modest scholarship, but travel expenses must be borne by them. SVP also aims to foster positive cross-cultural communication in a complex and fascinating country that is much misunderstood globally. Benefits:

UN Volunteers
One of the most famous volunteer programs works under the auspices of the UN. Volunteers are engaged in solving environmental problems, help disadvantaged people, participate in cultural exchange. There are a lot of people wanting to become a part of UN Volunteers projects, because the organization incurs volunteers' expenses, pays them a stipend.
Volunteers have to cope with tasks of various kinds. Candidates should be ready to work in different places and should be able to quickly adapt to life in different conditions and work under different circumstances. Participants cannot choose their own jobs (work is determined by the needs of the organization, and not by the personal preferences of the employees); and the final place of work of the participant will be known only after the candidate has been hired and after his arrival at work.
By deciding to work at the UN as an intern, you are making a contribution to the work of the UN to protect human rights, peace and development.
EVS or Erasmus +
ESC-project can be carried out on one of many topics: culture, work with young people, sports, social welfare, cultural heritage, art, human rights, environmental protection, work with refugees, people with disabilities, pensioners, children and much more . One project may cover activities on one or more topics. But it will always be a socially significant project.
Such a project can be implemented once in a lifetime, if you are between 18 and 30 years old, and only in a European Union country. The project can last from 2 to 12 months.
Each project is funded by the European Commission. Volunteer covered the cost of:
The volunteer is also provided with housing and medical insurance, which covers all the costs of medical care. In addition, a language course is provided for the country where the volunteer will live and work.
11
If your project is approved and you become an EVS-volunteer, you do not incur any organizational costs!
At the end of the project, in addition to invaluable experience, a network of international contacts, new professional and personal skills, the volunteer receives the Youth Pass. This is a certificate that you participated in the EVS program, where it will be written what you did, what results you achieved and what you learned.
Problems which the program solves:
- Reducing unemployment, especially among young people.
- Promoting adult education, especially for new skills and skills required by the labor market.

Practical part
MY EXPERIENCE OF VOLUNTEERING
I became a part of the volunteer movement about six months ago. During this time, I managed to take part in many interesting projects, met people who inspire me.
My friend invited me to be event-volunteer. She was a team-leader and recruited people to her new team. We were volunteers on my first event the Russia-Czech Republic match. It was the brightest match after the World Championship. And I sincerely wanted to be part of this huge volunteer family.
I am a member of The Volunteer Corps of Rostov-on-Don. Every volunteer has a volunteer's personal book. All event, where a volunteer has participated, is registered there.
At the events, my duties include navigating the guests, resolving misunderstandings and uplifting. Also I have participated in social projects, helping children, old people and homeless animals.
INTERVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERS
Hello! I'm at an event of AIESEC. This organization helps students to travel meaningfully. I'm going to interview international volunteers. So she's Zina and she's from Germany. And she's Aldo from Finland. It was really nice of you to spare me your time.
What does being a volunteer mean?
*Aldo* Being a volunteer means that I'm able to give my time and really help people. Because in my life everything is pretty good. And I know that there a lot of things that a lot of people don't have that good. And being volunteer I can help other people to feel own better I get something better in their lives.
*Zina* I think being a volunteer isn't everything about yourself. It's opportunity to share something. to get something better.
Why have you decided to take part in international volunteer projects?
*Aldo* Well, I spend my whole life in international organizations. I have my first international experience when I was 11 and since that I love working internationally. I get to meet amazing people, get to know other cultures and ways of working.
How many volunteer protests have you already participated in?
*Zina* It's my first one
*Aldo* Like this it's my first time. But as I said since I was 11 I have been almost every year doing some kinds of volunteering projects.
What impressed you mostly during your volunteering in Russia?
*Zina* For me, it's a least of people here. There really lots difference with
15
Germany, so all that people as you're a volunteer get to know new people, you get more incompact new people. People in Germany they are more organize and not really interesting in learning, getting to know. There are more people I would like that.
*Aldo* For me, the greatest thing is just thing how happy we can make people and how much make we help and how grateful for people I have helped.
What do you like the most of volunteering?
*Aldo* I love that it isn’t self-center. I mean, center so much on other people and what they need. Not what I want and I need but what other people need.
Do you believe that one person can change the world?
*Aldo and Zina* Yeah sure of course
What advise can you give people who want to become volunteers?
*Zina* It's the best way if you don't know what to do with your time, it's the best thing you can do just spend your time to be a volunteer and to make this world complicated, give something for myself all the time.
*Aldo* When you know what to do it's giving to other people is the best thing you can do.
Thanks a lot for your advise and help. It was pleasure to talk to you!
16
Conclusion
There are many reasons why people decide to volunteer, usually to give something back and make a difference in the lives of others. No matter when you decide to volunteer, or what you decide to do, it will bring you countless benefits. And by doing it you will be making a real difference in the lives of individuals, the community and the environment. You will have the chance to meet new people, while raising your social awareness.
Volunteerism is the thread that connects individuals, enabling them to work together for the good of their communities. Experiencing persistent conflict and stresses, inequitable resourcing and underdeveloped capacities, local and informal volunteers on the frontlines are struggling to keep pace with complex risks.
