The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930. Uruguay became the venue for the World Cup as one of the leading representatives of football power of the 1920s: the Uruguayans were winners of the Olympic Games of 1924 and 1928. The 1930 World Cup was the only world football championship before which there were no qualifying competitions.
