INTRODUCTION
Each person has a special place where he feels safe and comfortable. As for children, they also have such places. It can be their home, school where they spend most of their time or a club where they spend their free time. My special place is my school. I have been studying here for 6 years. Before entering the school I went to meet my first teacher. When I came in I got deeply impressed by school long corridors and a great number of rooms. I was a bit afraid how I would study in such a big school. At that time I was such a little girl. Now I am in the 6th form and the school is not as big as it seemed to be earlier. I have never thought it would become my second home and a special place for me. I think it is the best place besides my home, because I can see my friends here and do my favourite things: get new experience, take part in different events and attend many clubs. As for me, I always look forward to going to school and miss it during holidays. It means so much for me. I have also asked my classmates and other pupils of the 5 and 6 forms if they like their school or not. Most of the children (90%) answered positively. Among reasons for loving school they named teachers (45%), the history of the school (20%) and clubs at school (35%). So I’d like to share information about my school and to advertise it to you as a special place.
Everything said above motivated me to make a project “My school as a special place for me”
The aim of my work is to tell you about my school as the best place in the world. That’s why I put forward the following tasks:
The object of my research is – my school in facts and figures from the very beginning up to nowadays.
The subject is features that make my school special such as teachers and school facilities.
The hypothesis of my work is that there are many factors that make my school attractive to me and other pupils. If there are, what are they?
While working on the theme I used different methods such as analysis, generalization, and systematization and questionnaire. I worked with the documents from our school museum and spoke to the keeper of the museum, Malykhina E.V.
The practical value of the work is that my project can become an advertisement of my school and attract new pupils to it.
Chapter I. The history of my school.
Not long ago we went to the school museum. Among different items we saw several old photos. One of them was white and black and even a bit yellow. In that photo we saw the first teachers of the school. We got interested in the history of the school we have been studying at for six years. That’s why we decided to learn more about it.
Our school is almost of the same age as Berezniki. The school I go to is one of the oldest schools in the town of Berezniki. In 1929 Berezniki, one of the biggest industrial centres of the Western Ural, was started. With the building of the town the building of the famous Chemical plant (nowadays “Azot’) was started. As a result, many workers and their families rushed into the town.
The first primary school appeared in Churtan in 1930. Later, in 1931 – 1932 one more school – on Zhdanovskie Fields – was built. But all those schools were not appropriate for studying./7/
At that time it was very difficult for teachers to work. Their students studied in barracks. There were no chairs, desks and pupils had to sit on the floor. The rooms were poorly lit. There was no any furniture even in the teachers’ room. They kept books on the floor. That’s why in 1931 in School Lane a new stone school was built. All the teachers from the Churtan school went there. In 1932 the school was opened for its pupils. The first principle, Vorobyeva Nina Gavrilovna, met the children. She made a lot for the school. She tried hard to make the school the best. Dolganov Fyodor Ivanovich was the next principal. Such people as Bektemirova A.S., Kalugin A.V., Valuzhskaya A.P. did their best with great love and duty for the school to follow the policy of the whole country.
Thanks to the principal of the school A.P. Valuzhskaya the best chemistry room in the town was equipped. At the lessons she tried to unite pupils and the wonderful world of chemistry. She gave perfect lessons to do this.
At that time most pupils studied for 7 years. School-leavers tried to go to different technical schools to get working professions. Just few pupils studied for 10 years.
In 1937 Russia celebrated the 100th anniversary of Pushkin’s death. It is necessary to be said that elder pupils often organized Pushkin’s meetings. Later it was decided to ask the authorities to give the name of Pushkin A.S. to the school. It is the school I am studying now – school №1. My school celebrated its 80th anniversary in April, 2012./1/
Our school has its own chronicle. We opened it and began reading. In the book we saw this poem:
Есть много героев на свете,
Одни спускают курок,
Другие траншеи роют,
А третьи проводят урок.
Героям этим почетным,
Тем, кто учит детей,
Мы посылаем сегодня
Приветствие наших речей!
What a proud poem! Once it was recited by a pupil on the school jubilee. The school chronicle was printed. While turning over the pages we heard snapping. It was the paper. It was very old. In the chronicle we found some information about school building and teachers. We found a chapter about the teachers of that time. The chronicle contained their names. They were: Vorobyeva N.G., Uchastkina A.E., Karimova A.S., Vitsenko M.I., Kobeleva A.S., Novozhilova E.A., Sidneva A.V., Malkov F.M., Mikhailova E.N., Dolganov F.I.
While reading the school chronicle we understood that it had been very difficult for teacher to work. But we could be proud of them because they always tried to reach the chosen goal.
In 1940 the young teacher, Kukin A.P., became a principal of the school. His colleagues respected him and pupils loved him. /10/
It was 1941 when the Great Patriotic War broke up. The school-leavers of that year went to the front the next day after the festive party. Most of them died.
The principal of the school Kukin A.P. went to the front, too. After Kukin A.P. the principals of the school were Renev M.I. and Sokolov V.A. up to 1945. Some of the teachers went to defend their motherland, too. They were Rasskazov P.B., Isspelov S.N. and some others. Former pupils of the Pushkin school were the soldiers in the Red Army.
It was very difficult for teachers who stayed at school to work. Some town schools were turned into hospitals. As for my school, it welcomed pupils from those schools. The school worked in three shifts.
During the war teachers and pupils sent a lot of parcels and letters to the front. Teachers and pupils collected 102 610 rubles to built a plane. For that the school got gratitude from I.V. Stalin./9/
Many teachers and pupils of the school died during the war. Kukin A.P., the principal, died, too. Some became disabled, others came back with medals. The former pupil of the school Leonid Tomilin came back to the town and later joined the Red Army again. He became the Hero of the Great Patriotic War. He was the pride and the fame of the school. People were waiting for the victory. At least it came. Having celebrated it the country started to reestablish whatever had been destroyed. It was the national building. The country was carrying out 5-years plan.
In autumn 1945 the hospitals located at schools were closed. So, the schools began working as usual. Ostrovskogo school and Kirov school were opened for pupils again. As a result the life of my school returned to its usual work. Aladyshkin Yakov Ignatyevich became the principal of the school. Later, up to 1948, the principals were Kogan V.L. and Zalesov M.I.
Pushkin school tried to do the best to improve the work, to overcome all the troubles connected with the war time. The population of the town had increased by that time. It was caused by the growth of the number of the plants. As a result, pupils had to study in two shifts. The number of children was about 8000 instead of 800 in 1931./8/
Thanks to Sitnikov Alexander Ivanovich much was done in the field of development of primary school. He was the first director of studies. He was a very interesting and enthusiastic person. He was the first to organize a department of methodology where he tried to unite the best teachers’ experience. Later this department was reorganized into the central town pedagogical department.
The teachers were the masters of their profession. That’s why we can’t but say about Antonina Petrovna Rishard. For many years she had been teaching Russian and Literature. She was also a director of studies. She shared her experience in pedagogics and methodology with young teachers. А. P. Rishard was awarded for “Working valour” 1945.
In 1948 Vasilii Andreevich Zanin became the principal of the school. He was the honourable citizen of the town of Berezniki awarded with “Lenin order”. Under the run of the teachers and the principal pupils made a robot which was exhibited on the Exhibition of the Achievements of National Economy. More than that, the Pioneer Squad was put on the Union board of Fame.
In 1971 Korshunova Lidiya Mikhailovna became the principle. She managed to do her best to improve new conditions for study and teaching./5/
In 1976 Alexander Sergeevich Abramov became the principle. Thanks to him new parts of the building were put up and total reconstruction of the school was made. More than 12 million rubles were spent one third of the sum was given by Eltsin Fund.
During the years of school existence the record-breaking number of pupils left school with medals. Some of the former pupils became noble citizens of their country, doctors of sciences, generals and participants of the Military parades on Red Square, directors and workers. For example, Leonid Tomilin and Boris Eltsin./6/
Conclusion on Chapter I.
To sum up, my school is more than eighty years old. It was formed in 1931 after uniting the Churtan school and the school on Zhdanovskie fields. There were a lot of headmasters during the history of the school. Each of them did much for the development of the school. Such names as Vorobyeva N.G., Dolganov F.I., Valuzhskaya A.P., Kogan V.L., Zalesov M.I., Zanin V.A., Abramov A.S. and many others will be never forgotten. During the Great Patriotic War my school made a lot for the victory. Many pupils and teachers went to defend their Motherland. After the War a new period of the school development started. The number of pupils increased and the teachers made a lot for the development of education in Berezniki. My school is proud of such outstanding school-leavers as Leonid Tomilin and Boris Eltsin.
Chapter II. My school nowadays.
2.1 My school in facts and figures.
The principal of the school is Khaliulina Tatyana Vyacheslavovna. She has been running the school since 2009. Nowadays there are 800 pupils and 46 teachers in my school. An average age of the teachers is 47 years. All the teachers are highly qualified: 5 teachers have the highest qualification, 24 have the first qualification. Teachers of my school take part in different contests. The main task of the school is qualitative teaching. Year by year the number of pupils entering institutes and universities is about 60-70%. I love my school and I believe that it was the best, is the best and will be the best.
Last year my school celebrated the 80th anniversary. In February Naina Iosifovna Eltsina visited the school to open the memorial board to Boris Eltsin. A very interesting conference with the teachers and the pupils of the school was organized. During the conference she told a lot about the life of the first president of Russia. She also visited the school museum and took a note in the book of honour./ 5/
My school gives general education. When at school, children study Russian and Literature, history and Social Sciences, Mathematics and Physics, Chemistry and Biology, Geography and ICT. We also have classes in crafts for boys and design and home economics for girls, physical education, Art and Music. My school is rather big. It occupies an old two-storeyed building. But it also has modern tree-storeyed parts built under the run of the headmaster Abramov A.S. there are 32 rooms in my school. 6 of them are called “model”. On the ground floor, there is a big canteen and a number of rooms for younger children. On the first floor, there is a cloak room, a big gym and many rooms where we have different classes. On the second floor there are workshops for boys and a home economics room for girls where they learn to cook, sew and knit. You can also find a big conference room and a school museum on the second floor. Besides, there is a good library on the second floor where you can find any book or magazine you are interested in or need for your lessons. My school has sport facilities outside school building. It has a court where we play football, volleyball and basketball in summer and younger children ski there in winter. It is necessary to be said that all our rooms are well – equipped and have everything you need for study. We have Biology, Chemistry and Physics labs where there are different devices and equipment for experiments in these subject fields. We also have two computer rooms. We have classes 5 days a week. But the pupils of the 9, 10 and 11th forms have classes on Saturdays. Classes begin at 8.15 and last till 2 or 3 in the afternoon.
2.2 My school as a place for talents.
When classes are over, we seldom go home right away, because we have different additional classes, elective courses and clubs at school. These classes and clubs can suit any interests. If you are fond of sport, you can attend a basketball club. Are you a fan of drawing, than additional drawing classes are for you. The leader of the club, Kislitsyna Irina Fedorovna, will teach you different techniques in drawing. Her pupils always take part in different contests and exhibitions and often win different prizes. Our pupils can teach you the basis of journalism and rhetoric, solve tasks in Physics and Maths, speak English and do experiments.
One more point that makes my school special for me is the teachers who work in my school. All the teachers are kind and creative. They are always ready to work and teach you lots of interesting things. They take part in different contests and often get awards. For example, Tukhtasinov Anvar Tokhirovich. He is the best teacher in our school. He is very energetic and always tries to make his lessons for us. He always takes part in pedagogical contests and has many awards. He is the winner of the regional contest “The teacher of the year” and many other contests. /2, 3/
More than that our school has teacher’s dynasties. They are the families of our teacher of Maths, Bragina T.M. and the teacher of English Davydova L.I. In 1971 Bragina Tatyana Mikhailovna graduated from the Perm Teacher Training institute. She went to work to Pushkin school as a teacher of mathematics. She was only 21 years old that time. She taught the 9th form. “I was very afraid”, - said Tatyana Mikhailovna. She became the form teacher of the 5th form and she had good relationships with the children of the class.
Other teachers complained that the pupils did homework only on mathematics but not on other subjects. The class consisted of 40 pupils. And on Teacher’s Day she got 40 postcards. “It was very pleasant”, - she said.
There are three generations of teachers in the Bragins family. Her grandmother, Eltysheva Maria Aleksandrovna was a teacher of primary school. Her mother, Chumakova Zoya Ivanovna, was a teacher of Russian and Literature. And Tatyana Mikhailovna became the teacher of Mathematics.
Tatyana Mikhailovna is a very nice and kind teacher. She is always ready to help at the blackboard. We think she is the best teacher of Mathematics. We think that nobody could explain the lesson better than Tatyana Mikhailovna.
The teacher of our school, Tatyana Ivanovna Kalinichenko, got her first form in September, 1956. She was seventeen years old and she was very afraid when fifty pairs of eyes were looking at her.
Tatyana Ivanovna was born on the fourth of January 1919 in Ukraine. The family she was born in was very big. All the members of the family worked and encouraged each other. At that time the fascists were in Ukraine. In January 1919 they went to the Kalinichenko family. They were looking for Tatyana’s father because they considered him to be Bolshevik. They wanted to shoot him. At that moment a newly born baby (she was Tanechka) cried. The fascists began speaking in German “One more bolshevik was born. We need to shoot her”. Tatyana’s mother was very afraid. But fortunately one of their friends helped them. Tatyana’s father went through the First and the Second World Wars. Tatyana’s sister and brother died.
Tatyana got married her former classmate Ivan Khlypenko. He graduated a technical school and became a trained soldier. And she had to follow him everywhere until they settled in Berezniki in 1956. The same year Tatyana Ivanovna Khlypenko took her “first form” in our school. It was the form of “problem’ children. But she managed to control them. All her pupils knew that it was better for them not to go to school without done homework. She had been working at school almost all her life and taught many pupils.
Ludmila Ivanovna Davydova, the daughter of Tatyana Ivanovna, is a teacher of English in our school. She is very sociable, kind and helpful. The mother and the daughter usually spend summer in the garden. Ludmila Ivanovna continued the teaching dynasty after Tatyana Ivanovna.
But there is one more place in my school which I can’t do without. It is called the centre of esthetic education for children “Elegiya”. I have been a pupil of this school for already 6 years. I attend the classes of vocal. My teacher is Smirnova Natalia Nikolaevna. I take part in different festivals and contests not only within my town, but also regional, national and international. Thanks to my teachers I have a lot of different awards. Among them there are such awards as “Young talents of Prikamye”, “Steps to success” and many others.
“Elegiya” was set up in 1985. This centre provides children from my school and other schools of the town of Berezniki with 757 services on such different lines of activity as Sport, Art, Ecology, Music and Culture. Children aged 7-18 attend the centre. The teachers of Elegiya work on 15 programmes for talented pupils. All the programmes take from 3 months till 8 years to study. If you like music, you can learn to play the piano, the guitar or the accordion. You can also join a school choir or attend the classes of vocal and solfeggio. The teachers also can teach you to draw or to create cartoons. If you want to do sport, you can do aerobics and rythmics. The centre has two shifts of work and have classes even on Saturdays. If you are a pupil of Elegia, you have an opportunity to have classes, take part in concerts, exhibitions and contests, festivals and presentations. 10 teachers work in the centre. 73% of teachers have higher education, 67% have higher and first qualification. One teacher is the candidate of pedagogical sciences. Two teachers are awarded with the town award “Priznanie” and two teachers are awarded with the award “Honourable Educator of the Russian Federation”. The teachers of the centre take part in different contests of professional crafts. Their pupils also have great achievements. For example, many students take part in town, regional, national and international contests. Since 2008 students of Elegiya have taken part in 75 contests and festivals and 194 children have become the winners. Four students are awarded with the town award “the way to success” and the regional award “Young talents”. The three pupils got the chance to attend the Kremlin Palace. / 4/
Conclusion on Chapter II.
My school is an old two-storeyed building. Last year my school celebrated its 80th anniversary. There are 801 pupils and 41 teachers there. The headmaster of the school is Khaliulina T.V. The school gives general education for children aged 7-18. There 32 rooms in the school. All the rooms are well-equipped. We have got two gyms where we do different sports, a library with a good book fund, and a school museum which tells about the past and present of our school. But not only school facilities and activities are the good point of my school. The pride of the school is its after-school activities (classes and clubs). My special place is the centre “Elegiya” where I learn to sing and dance. It was formed in 1985 and provides educational services for children aged 7-18.
Conclusion
While making a project on the theme “My school as a special place for me”, working with the school chronicles I have learned about the history of my school from the first days up to now and found out what makes my school attractive to its pupils.
The school I am studying at is 80 years old. The school was opened in 1932. It is one of the oldest schools in the town. The history of the school started simultaneously with the building of the town. The first primary school was built in Churtan. Later a stone school in School lane was built and it welcomed Churtan school. In 1937 the school got the name after A.S. Pushkin because parties devoted to him were usual events in the school. During the Great Patriotic war the school worked in three shifts because the nearby schools were made hospitals. The teachers and the pupils of the school made their impact into the victory. Many pupils and teachers died during the war.
After the war the main task of the school began its development. All the principals and teachers followed the task selflessly. I told about the principals and their impacts to the development of the school. All of them did their best. In the school chronicles I found their names and photos.
Then I told about the modern history of the school. Whatever the time my school’s aim is its pupils. The teachers try to teach them everything. And the principal tries to create all the conditions for that. I tried to tell about everything that could attract children to my school: its facilities, equipment and teachers. I am proud of studying in my school. Though it is located in a rather old building, it is well equipped and has everything that pupils need for lessons. It also offers a wide range of clubs and additional afterschool activities. I paid my attention to my special place in the school – the centre “Elegiya”. It is the centre of esthetic education for children. The teachers of the centre will teach you to sing and dance, to create cartoons and draw, and so on.
