The purpose and aim of my project “They keep on watching for the planet”
The purpose:
The purpose of my project is to show another way for the development of our civilization. I do not think that Papuan are on the low level of intelligence. I want to prove that they are wise and live their lives to the fullest.
The aims of my project:
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen! We will travel to Papua New Guinea. We will meet Papuans from Mikluho Maklay coast, who keep on watching for the planet. My project is about them.
I want to prove that they are wise and live their lives to the fullest.
Together with Nikolay Mikluho Maklay – a descendant of the famous Russian scientist we are going to join his expedition as eco-tourists. Maybe you will like the nature and the way of life of the locals and stay there forever.
Our first day
An enormous ocean. We are flying by a helicopter. It doesn’t land, it waters on the waves instead. I sigh with relief, take my backpack and step on the wing. We are taken to the village Bongu by boat. My second picture is like a piece of a film. Palms surrounding a narrow strip of the wet sand. A scratching of corals under the bottom of the boat. We are jumping on the beach and find ourselves surrounded by the crowd of naked dark skinned Papuans. They are investigating us for a moment and now they are smiling widely.
The second day
My next picture. It’s morning. I’m waking up, the roosters are doodling. We hear a low sound of a monotonous song. These are women. They are cooking breakfast on the fire. We join them. They give us some corn and coconut milk with a baked banana. I look at my watch. It’s 5 am, while it’s not terribly hot I follow my friends to the plot. We are going to spud batata (sweet potato). Sweet potato is the main food crop in many tropical countries of the world. As a helper, I bravely pick away a handful of grass, explaining that weeds don’t let vegetables grow. Papua women are surprised. They begin to list me the names of different plants for the rising temperature, for headaches, for bleeding. I am quickly writing them down into my diary. Later I have consulted the medical encyclopedia and found out the heeling properties of these herbs. In the evening, I put down into my diary «How little I know about the universe. I have been too snobbish with the locals, but they revealed so deep understanding of nature, that my mentor’s behavior failed».
Actually, this plot in the jungle does not only feed the tribe, but keeps them healthy, cures and takes care of the future generations.
Evening. I heard about the diversity of flora and fauna of Papua New Guinea. Now lets turn to the pictures in my diary.
There are groves of sago palms, thickets of wild sugar cane. Coniferous species prevail in the forests, especially Araucaria. The animal world of the country is represented by reptiles, insects, especially numerous birds. They are cassowaries, heaven birds, crowned pigeons, weedy chickens, and parrots. I heard their cries at night. It was scary.
It is boiling hot, so we turned our feet to the seashore. There have been some boats with divers. Fishermen don’t have and special equipment, but only big stones for plunging deeper into the water and tridents. They look at my diving costume and a gun with suspicion. The underwater life is amazing: bright coral reefs, starfish, colourful fish. I have taken some stunning photos. We caught fish for the tribe and there was a feast in the evening. We danced with the locals and were very happy.
My diary
The next day we helped with the farming and at last, the chief of the tribe made a ritual dancing around the fire. We tried the local drink and really “lost heads”. It made us dance, cry, jump as if we were Papuans.
Departure
We got used to get up at 5 am. We packed rucksacks, said goodbye to the local friends and left this hospitable Bongu village. I would call it the Coast of Hope.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I would like to say that the native people of Papua New Guinea have managed to conserve their way of live for a long period. Cutting the trees, we destroy the natural resources for their living. Excavating the ground, expanding our the so-called “cultural values”, like smoking, eating fast food, playing computer games we can make these unique tribes extinct. To my mind, they reveal wisdom cooperating with nature and rejecting our ill civilization. They let us play our dangerous games, but if the whole world (I mean modern politics) cracks down, the Bongu people will survive and even do not notice our disappearance. They will live as their predecessors did. They keep on watching for the planet.
