Introduction The task of this project is to find out the interesting facts about the River Thames, since this topic is extensive and multifaceted. The actuality London would not be London without the River Thames. Today the Thames has become a symbol of London, just as much as Big Ben or Buckingham Palace. The relevance of this topic lies in the fact that it shows the indisputable importance of the main water artery in the life of such a huge megalopolis as London and such a great country as the UK as a whole.

Geographical position of the Thames The River Thames is a river that flows through southern England, most notably through London. At 215 miles (346 km), it is the longest river in England and the second longest in the United Kingdom, after the River Severn. It rises on a hill Cotswolds, takes place in the precincts of London, runs into the North Sea, forming an estuary. The width of the river within the boundaries of London 200-250 m. The Thames supports a variety of wildlife and has a number of adjoining Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

Historical importance Some of the earliest written references to the Thames occur in Julius Caesar's account of his second expedition to Britain in 54 BC, when the Thames presented a major obstacle and he encountered the Iron Age Belgic tribes the Catuvellauni and the Atrebates along the river. In 43 AD E, under the Emperor Claudius, the Romans occupied England and, recognising the river's strategic and economic importance, built fortifications along the Thames valley including a major camp at Dorchester. In the Middle Ages, the Romano-British settlement grew north of the confluence of the river, because the site was naturally protected from attack on the eastern side of the Cherwell River, and to the west by the River Thames. By the 18th century, the Thames was one of the busiest waterways in the world, as London became the center of an extensive, mercantile British Empire, and gradually over the next century docks expanded on the island of dogs and beyond.

The Thames is a place for rest and hanging out Fact 1 Before the Westminster Bridge was built in 1740, it was possible to move on foot to the other bank only through the London Bridge, which was later reconstructed, and in 1820 a new one was erected in its place. Supports supporting 19 vaults of the original stone structure, largely prevented the free flow of the river. Therefore, almost for the six-century history of this bridge, the Thames was covered with ice only a few times. When this happened, they arranged big "fairs on ice." There were sports competitions, and fried bulls. Here came and members of the royal family.

The Thames Water Ring Fact 3 The London water supply system - the Thames Water Circuit, one of the most modern water supply systems in the world. The oldest London central water pipeline was built in 1838. In 1986, the Thames Water Circuit was conceived. The quality of water is checked daily. The Thames Water Ring provides residents of Greater London with 583 million liters of drinking water a day.

Public water transport Fact 2 Public water transport operates on the Thames. The system of urban water routes is known as London River Services. Some routes are aimed at tourists and walks, others are more often used by Londoners themselves as ordinary public transport, for example, for commuting to work. For the 2012 Olympics, from the Royal Docks area to Greenwich through the Thames, the Air Line cable car was launched.

Rowing races and royal regatta on the Thames Fact 4 More recently, every spring began to be held "Rowing race" - a competition between the Oxford and Cambridge universities. Spectators line up along the banks of the Thames between Patney and Mortlake and are rooting for the teams. Each team of eight rowers swims a distance of about 7 kilometers in less than 20 minutes. For the first time this competition was held in 1829 in the city of Henley-on-Thames, upstream. After he was moved from there, Henley began to arrange Henley's regatta. It attracts the best rowers from all over the world, both men and women. The total length of the distance is 1,600 meters. This summer regatta - one of the first and popular in Europe - has become a favorite annual event.

Conclusion In conclusion, we found out that the Thames has played an extremely important part in making England what it is today, in the history, economy, trade, culture of Great Britain. We also learned that the infrastructure of public water transport is one of the best in the world. Based on the waters of the Thames, a unique water-ring system was created, supplying fresh water to all of London and the surrounding areas. And also that the Thames is not only an economic tool, but also a river that plays an important sporting and cultural role in the life of Great Britain.
