Introduction

Clothes need no words. When we see a man, we notice if he or she wears the right clothes: size, colour and fashion. People of different ages like to wear T-shirts. Many of them like T-shirts with inscriptions in English.

The object of my investigation is the inscriptions on the T-shirts.

The subject of my investigation is the determination of the information of the inscriptions on the T-shirts.

The aim of my investigation is the relation of the meaning of the inscriptions with the language level of the owner.

The hypothesis is that the children and their parents understand the English inscriptions on the T-shirts they wear.

To find it out I was to:

• study the history of a T-shirt;
• do a survey among my classmates and their parents;
• translate the inscriptions on the T-shirts;
• classify the inscriptions on the T-shirts.

The History of a T-shirt

A T-shirt (or t shirt, or tee) is a style of unisex fabric shirt named after the T-shapes. It normally has short sleeves and a round neckline. T-shirts are generally made of a light, inexpensive fabric and are easy to clean. The T-shirt evolved from undergarments used in the 19th century. In the early 1950s, several companies based in Miami, Florida, started to decorate T-shirts with different names and characters. The first prints were the pictures of Mickey Mouse and Coca Cola. Since the 1990s, it has become common practice for companies to produce T-shirts with their corporate logos or messages.

My Research

I asked my classmates and their parents if they wear T-shirts with inscriptions. 28 children and 28 parents took part in my research. You see that most of them wear T-shirts with inscriptions. And most of them know the translation and they like it. I hope that all the inscriptions on the T-shirts are wise.

Inscriptions on the T-shirts

I surfed the internet and found many T-shirts with inscriptions. It turned out to be very difficult to classify them. They may have some appeal. They tell about what the people like. They contain world brands.

T-shirts with funny inscriptions is a separate group. Look at them. They say:

• I don’t need Google. My wife knows everything.
• Wash me please.
• I was planned. I was a surprise.
• Use it.
• Take me to the hospital.

Conclusion

A T-shirt has become an integral part of every man’s wardrobe. We put it on to meet friends, go shopping, work in the garden or to go to a party. I can draw a conclusion that both the children and their parents choose not only the colour or the fashion, they read the inscriptions. The language level does not matter. You can look the translation in the dictionary. Many inscriptions in English need no translation at all.  But learn English to be modern!
