THE CONSTRUCTION OF FAROESE LIGHTHOUSE Construction of the Alexandria lighthouse began in the 4th century BC. It is believed that this masterpiece of architectural thought was built by Sostrat , a native of Knidia . Alexandria lighthouse is the world's first building of this type and the highest structure of the ancient world. This is the answer to the question why the Faros lighthouse is part of the seven wonders of the world.

The total height of the lighthouse is 120-135 meters, its light was visible at a distance of 51 km . The lighthouse of Alexandria served faithfully for nearly a thousand years, but it was badly damaged by an earthquake in the year 796 BC. After this earthquake, five more very powerful and long-lasting tremors have been recorded in history, which have finally distroyed this magnificent creation of human hands .

LOOKED LIKE A LIGHTHOUSE The lighthouse on all sides was surrounded by thick walls of the fortress, and in case of a siege there was a large supply of water and food in its dungeons. The lighthouse was built in the shape of a tower and had three floors. There was a bronze (according to other versions – gold) statue of Poseidon on the dome, whose height exceeded seven meters. It saw more than one dynasty of Egyptian rulers and the Roman legionaries . The lighthouse stopped working in 365 AD, when one of the strongest earthquakes in the Mediterranean caused a tsunami that flooded the city.

It was transformed into something like a small castle-fortress, inside of which lived the remaining inhabitants of the island. This is what you can see by visiting the island of Faros, which is quite popular among tourists. After complete construction and cosmetic repairs the lighthouse has a more modern look, which makes it a modern structure with a centuries-old history.

Its image is used on the flag and the seal of the province, as well as on the flag of the University of Alexandria.
