Introduction
Tattoos have become a part of modern culture. They are fashionable, nice and challenging. Not surprisingly, many people decorate their body with them. However, they do not always think about the possible consequences. I was thinking about getting a tattoo …but the question has been on my mind – are tattoos safe?
The purpose of my research is
-to find out the significance of tattoos in modern life
-to learn how they affect human health
-to brush up my English
The object of research is tattoos and their influence on people’s health.
Part I.
What is a tattoo? What equipment is used?
A tattoo is a design on the skin that can be either permanent or non-permanent. Non-permanents are called temporary tattoos. The tattoo piece is pressed on dry skin while a piece of wet cloth is applied to the paper backing to remove it and later, the tattoo can be washed off.
Permanent tattoos on the other hand are made with tattoo needles. These needles are attached to needle bars that can puncture the skin at 50 to 3,000 times a minute. Professionals know how deep to pierce the skin to create a permanent line.
There are lots of tattooing techniques. Some tribes in Africa make cuts on the body and rub ash into them. Tattooists may also work with sharpened sticks or animal bones — the procedure is painful and not at all hygienic. In modern studios electric machines are usually used. They have one or more needles that quickly go in and out of the skin. The machine has ink containers and the ink gets into the skin via the needles. For safety reasons the needles should only be used once.
Тhе history of tattoos. What are the motives for getting a tattoo?
A tattoo is definitely not a new idea, as archaeologists have discovered remains of tattooed human beings that date back thousands of years. In fact, the practice of putting permanent images on the body with various materials and tools may have always been a part of human history. There is evidence that it may be an ancient craft going all the way back to the ice age. There are mummified remains of ancient Egyptians with tattoos. The oldest tattooed person, the so-called Iceman, is a frozen mummy found in the Alps in 1991. The frozen man, aged more than 5000 years, has 57 tattoos!
People have used the tattoo in coming-of-age ceremonies, fertility rites, as symbols of noble birth and much more. In addition, some have chosen the tattoo as a show of independence or defiance, or to make a statement about a specific aspect of their life. In more recent times, individuals have opted for a tattoo or the related body piercing as a way of showing solidarity with a group of individuals, sometimes a gang or sports team. In ancient times tattoos were considered to be the element of a particular clan. The ancient traditions of its people and certain rites were portrayed on them. With the help of tattoos one could see how the people lived and what traditions they had.
Our ancestors were not trying to attract attention, for them it was something private and sacred. Today tattoo is a trend of Russian art without rich traditions. In its historical past, for example, in the Soviet times, tattoos had mainly political, military and prison meaning.
Where did tattoos originate?
In Europe the word "tattoo" appeared in 1769, after the explorer James Cook had returned from Tahiti. He brought the Polynesian with him. His body was completely covered with different characters and drawings. From this moment there was a great interest in tattoos in Europe. The roots of the word are probably in the language of Tahiti. This culture’s word was “tattau,” which indicated a design or special marking on the skin.
Interesting Facts
-The ancient Slav tattoos were mostly for women. Drawings on the skin were like a ritual talisman of a homemaker.
- Winston Churchill had an anchor tattoo. By the way, in 1900, 90% of the U.S. Navy sailors had tattoos.
--Albert Einstein, Nikolay II and Stalin had tattoos as well.
- The Japanese geisha tattoo was one of the five proofs of love. Four others were clipping the hair, writing love vows, clipping the nails, and finally cutting off the little finger.
- The Catholic Church is not against tattoos. The natives were made tattoos in the form of a cross, so they could not have another faith. Nowadays there are about one hundred officially registered associations of Christian tattoos that offer their services for tattooing with biblical scenes and canonical texts. These tattoos can even be sanctified!
- John F. Kennedy had a tattoo on his shoulder in the shape of a turtle, meaning that the owner had crossed the equator.
- The most "tattooed" man in the world - Lucky Diamond Rich, his body is completely covered with tattoos.
- Julia Gnuse (known by the nickname The Illustrated Lady') is the world's most tattooed woman, having coverage of 95% of her body.
Consequences of Having Tattoos
The sense of fashion causes some people to want a tattoo on their body. Some have been concerned about the effects of tattoo ink on human health and it’s true that some people have negative reactions to the chemicals used to make the different colors. Ink poisoning can cause a person to have headaches, irritation around the area, or damage to the nervous system.
There are health risks that are attached to getting a tattoo. They are tuberculosis, HIV and hepatitis B and C. The tattoo needles need to be sterilized after each use by using proper sterilizing equipment. A tattoo is not only a design but also a scar.
There are standards set out by The Alliance of Professional Tattooists which the professional tattooist should follow. Getting tattoos done by professionals who adhere to these rules will minimize the health risks.
Many people often forget that when you get a tattoo, you can NOT donate blood to patients suffering blood loss of some sort.
Some people also have problems with tattoo removal, a procedure that is a bit easier now with new laser processes. But complete removal usually involves at least moderate pain. Completely removing a tattoo is usually impossible and most who try to have this procedure will carry a scar in that area for life.
While most people consider a tattoo permanent, the truth is the art fades over time and must be renewed by a tattoo artist. Changes in body structure can also alter a tattoo that was just fine when originally put on.
Are tattoos unprofessional?
Tattoos that are obviously seen could lessen a person chance of getting hired at a job. Most low paying jobs such as McDonalds, Aeropostale, etc. will suggest clothing or accessories to cover a person tattoo. Not covering a tattoo after suggested to have it covered can cause that person to get fired. During the summer, some people wear over-excessive clothing, which can trigger a heat stroke. Although tattoos are suggested to not be shown to the public, some tattoos can not be covered up, such as tattoos on a person face. Ski masks can cover face tattoos, but ski masks are also considered unprofessional. Most jobs will not allow a ski mask to be worn...
However Ford Motor Co. allows employees from the most senior executives on down to have tattoos and piercings, except those that could endanger factory workers. The same goes for Boeing Co. In Silicon Valley, the tech industry law firm Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich, & Rosati counts a few tattooed and pierced attorneys among its staff. Vincent Weiner, a tattoo artist in Los Angeles, says everyone from federal judges to a retired corporate vice president is lining up for body art these days.
Part II.
Why are tattoos popular nowadays?
The word "tattoo" is one of the most popular search words on the Internet, according to the search engine Lycos. Tattoos are surprisingly popular in different parts of the globe. In all, one in every 10 Americans have tattoos, up from one out of every hundred three decades ago, according to the Alliance of Professional Tattooists based in Annapolis, Md. Upper-middle-class women between the ages of 20 and 40, especially those that dread mutating later in life into Soccer Moms, fuel most of the growth, according to tattoo parlors.
My research
As for my research, I asked over 25 my schoolmates to share their views on getting tattoos. To do it I offered the questionnaire to the students of the secondary school:
1. Do you like tattoos?
2. Do you plan to get tattoos?
3. Do you think tattoos can be dangerous?
The results are:
According to the survey carried out in our school, 84% of students like tattoos.
72% of students plan to get tattoos someday.
52% of students think that tattoos can be dangerous.
Conclusion
So, I can make a conclusion, that tattooing is popular in many parts of the world and it is practiced for decorative, religious or other reasons.
Doctors warn people against possible dangers of tattooing including infection and allergic reactions. Before you decide to make different kinds of tattoos, you must think of your health! Keep in mind that tattoos are in your skin forever. Is the game worth the candle? Remember that health and beauty are inseparably linked. That is why don't turn yourself into an invalid for the sake of beauty, fashion or fame. Anyway, tattoos are really a serious step. In general, before making a tattoo, think carefully about your decision.
To sum up, I want to give some important tips for those who still want to get tattoos. If teenagers follow these recommendations, they will considerably reduce harmful consequences of tattooing.
Helpful tips
1. Think twice before you get a tattoo or piercing. Take all consequences into
consideration.
2. Ask your parents’ permission.
3. If you are determined to do it and your parents are not against it, consult your
doctor and do allergy tests.
4. Choose reliable salons and masters.
5. Avoid covering all your body with tattoos or piercing. One or two will be
enough to express your individuality.
6. Take care of your health. If something goes wrong, apply to the doctor.
