Why do cats need whiskers? The project’s author: Koloberdina Feona Research advisor : Solodovnikova E.V.Слайд 2
Cats are my favourite animals. I've got 2 of them at home. I am interested why cats need whiskers. Са n these animals do without them? To know that I asked my mum and dad to help me. I found the information in the books and the Internet.
Слайд 3
The aim of my research To know why cats need whiskers. What will happen if the cat loses them?
Слайд 4
Also I plan to study the history of cats - from the Ancient Egypt to our days , and interview my classmates and friends. This is Sphynx cat, it hasn’t g ot any whiskers
Слайд 5
Maine-coon Missie has got the longest whiskers in the world

A cat's past Did you know that all cats, including lions, tigers and our own pets, are descended from one prehistoric creature? And that it was cats that chose to live with people, not the other way round?! Today's domestic cats have a very long and interesting history. Come on a journey through time to discover more... 20 million years ago The first carnivores that actually look like cats walk the earth. 12 million years ago The oldest known relative of today's domestic cat develops. 4000 BC In ancient Egypt, the African wildcat enters towns in search of food - mainly rats in Egyptian grain stores – and chooses to live close to people.
Слайд 7
2000 BC Cats live with humans and enjoy the food and shelter they provide. The Egyptians welcome cats into their homes because they keep snakes away. Egyptians also worship cats as sacred animals and ban people from taking them to other countries. 1000 BC – 500 BC Domesticated cats - used to living with people - spread across Asia and into India . 500 AD The Romans introduce cats to the whole of Europe, including Britain, as their empire gets bigger. 1400s After being objects of worship for the Egyptians for thousands of years, cats now associated with evil and witches. They are treated badly and often killed. 1700s American settlers ship in large number of cats from Europe to control plagues of rats; the domestic cat then spreads across the Americas.

1800s The popularity of cats as pets in Britain grows, although cruelty is still everywhere. 1914-8 Cats serve in the First World War, to sniff out poisonous gas in the trenches and on war ships to control rats. 1927 Cats Protection is created, originally to educate people about cats and cat care, but later to help and rehome unwanted cats. 2000s Cat become one of the most popular pets. Cats are popular because they are both independent and affectionate too.

The objects of my research: Cats Basil and Dasha The subjects of research: the cats’ whiskers (vibrissae)
Слайд 10
Vibrissae is a Latin word It means: vibrating, crankling
Слайд 11
The tasks: 1. To know the information: -the meaning of the cats' whiskers ; -to study the role and functions of whiskers 2. To ask my classmates and friends -why do the cats need whiskers -can we know the pet's mood by the whiskers Hypothesis: the cats need whiskers to see and feel the world around them
Слайд 12
The position of the cat’s vibrissae
Слайд 13
The cat can feel the floor vibrations by her paws
Слайд 14
The hairs near her eyes and eyebrows have the protective function
Слайд 15
You can see the cat’s mood by the position of her whiskers

Why Do Cats Have Whiskers? Those stiff hairs on your cat’s face and legs don’t just add to her cuteness -- they have real work to do. Whiskers are GPS and radar systems for your cat. They are a powerful and important part of how a cat senses the world. How They Work Each thick whisker is filled with tiny, supersensitive nerves that help your cat feel distance and space. It’s also how she detects what’s around her. There’s also a sensory organ at the tip of each whisker. It picks up vibrations in the environment that help the cat sense where she is and what other creatures are around her. What’s Your Cat’s Mood? Watch Her Whiskers A complex set of muscles on the face moves whiskers. The way a cat arranges them will tell another animal – or humans -- how she’s feeling. When a cat is relaxed, her whiskers will be still, sticking straight out from the side of her head. If she is curious or is on the hunt, she’ll press them forward. Cats that are nervous or upset will pin the whiskers back toward the face. Whiskers Don’t Need Trimming! Like other hairs on a cat’s body, whiskers shed. That’s normal. But you should never trim them. A cat with cut whiskers will become disoriented and scared.
Слайд 17
Practical meaning: to know our favourite pets better making a scientific research.
Слайд 18
As a cat cannot sit still for a long time, I used sausage to measure my pets’ whiskers. Basil’s result is 8 cm, Dasha’s – 12 cm long.
Слайд 19
I found out that the shoulder width of my cats is the same as their whiskers’ length
Слайд 20
The next stage: to prove that the cat whiskers help our pets to move in the room and feel the distance and objects around Tie the cat’s eyes Watch how she moves Find a way out of the room with her eyes tied
Слайд 21
The next stage: to prove that the cat whiskers help our pets to move in the room and feel the distance and objects around It’s known that cats can find a way using their memory Cats with bad eyesight can hear and smell better, their whiskers become longer
Слайд 22
I asked my classmates to answer the question – Why do cats need whiskers. The answers were different:
Слайд 23
THE RESULTS - most of my classmates think that cats need whiskers to sniff
Слайд 24
I think that the new information about cats will help me to understand them better. We should care about our pets, they love us and make our life more interesting. So let’s do the same for them !
