Marina Tsvetaeva There are some memorial places in Tarusa connected with the poet Marina Tsvetaeva. The name of the genius of Russian poetry Marina Tsvetaeva (1892-1941) is known in many countries throughout the world but few people know that Tarusa had great influence on her life and work.

The Oka river She devoted many poems to Tarusa. Tarusa inspired Marina all her life. Later when she lived in immigration in France her love to Russia expressed itself also in her love to Tarusa and the Oka river.

The Tsvetaev’s museum The museum was opened on 4 th October 1992 in connection with the 100 anniversary of Marina Tsvetaeva. 1992 was announced to be Marina Tsvetaeva’s year by UNESCO. The museum is devoted not only to Marina Tsvetaeva but to her whole family that takes up a special place in Russian culture.

“House of Tyo” The house where the Tsvetaevs’ museum is now situated was the house of the Main family – “House of Tyo”. Marina Tsvetaeva’s grandfather Alexander Main bought it in 1899. After his wife’s death he married to Swiss governess of his children to whom Marina and her sister Anastassiya gave the nickname “Tyo” (from the mispronounced “aunt”). They visited this house very often, because Tyo loved them very much. When the Tsvetaevs came to Tarusa in winter they stayed in this house of Tyo.

Ariadna Efron’s tomb The elder daughter of Tsvetaeva Ariadna who became a translator spent several decades in Stalin’s prisons but the rest of her life she lived in Tarusa where she died in 1975. She was buried here. Ariadna contributed a lot for making Marina Tsvetaeva’s poetry known again in Russia. The next publication of Marina Tsvetaeva’s poetry after 1922 was only 40 years later in 1962. The text was prepared for publishing by Ariadna Sergeevna Efron.

The stone of Marina Tsvetaeva In 1934 in her Parisian essay “Kirilovni” Marina wrote: “I would like to be buried in the Tarusa’s Khlyst cemetery, under the elder bush, in one of the graves with the silver dove, where the reddest and biggest strawberries grow. But if it is unrealisable, if I can’t be buried there or this cemetery does not exist, I would like that a stone from the Tarusa’s stone quarry would be put on one of its hills near the Oka river with the inscription: “Here Marina Tsvetaeva would like to be buried”

Marina Tsvetaeva’s monument Now Tarusa has a monument to the great poet Marina Tsvetaeva. The monument is put in the centre of Tarusa on the high bank of the Oka river. The authors of this idea are the People’s artist of Russia Boris Messerer and the sculptor Vladimir Soskiev.
