Dear friends,

Today we invite you to visit one of the most beautiful and attractive places of Shuryshkarskiy District!  Welcome to Ovgort!

Ovgort is the third largest settlement in Shuryshkarskiy District. It was founded in 1895 by Antip Murkin on the right bank of the river Synya. The village is surrounded by large beautiful forests where you can find a great variety of wild animals, birds and plants. High pines and fir trees are growing in the streets of Ovgort defending it against severe northern winds. The water in the Synya is clean and pure.

Nowadays over 1000 people live in Ovgort and almost 80% of them are the native population – Khanty. The name Ovgort comes from two Khanty words “ov” which means the door and “gort” meaning the village. That is why we can say that Ovgort opens the door to Shuryshkarskiy District and to the whole Yamal Peninsula!

So, if you want to see the way the Khanty live and drive their herds of reindeer, come to our village! You’ll have a chance to visit a “chum” – the traditional home of the Siberian people and taste national dishes of fish and reindeer meat.

But in spite of everything, Ovgort is growing and developing. Old buildings are being destroyed, new ones are being built. You can find here a lot of big and beautiful houses with all modern conveniences.

There are 6 shops, a bakery, a house of culture, a library, a secondary boarding school, a kindergarten and a lot of playgrounds for children and sports grounds for teenagers.

The administration of the village pays much attention to sports. The young people from Ovgort take part in many regional and federal competitions and often win. The young sportsmen can exercise in a special new gym.

Well, as you see, Ovgort is small but worth seeing and visiting. You can come here by ship in summer and by car, snowcar or a helicopter in winter.
