Vatnajökull is the largest national Park in Iceland . Its area is 12,000 km2 - almost 12% of the territory of Iceland . The Park was founded in the 7th of June in 2008 and included the former national parks of Skaftafell , established in 1967 and Yemelchenkov , founded in 1973.

Its area is the largest in Europe . The Park is huge Vatnajökull glacier , occupying the eighth part of the area of Iceland .

Yemelchenkov , is located in the North of Iceland , close to the famous waterfall Dettifoss . More than 8 thousand years ago under the river formed the volcano and after the eruption the area has changed dramatically and formed the terrain . There is Rock Echo in the center .

Red mountain , so named because of the high content of iron . Of the attractions stands out the canyon of Asbyrgi , which Northern part is like a horseshoe .

Eruptions under ice sheets called ice flows that raised the water level in the river Skadar . The climate is softer in this area . T han the rest of Iceland , then even more often on Sunny days , which is unusual for the South of Iceland .

The park is the svartifoss waterfall ( Black falls ), with a height of 12 meters . The column appeared in the lava flow slowly cooled and crystallized . Something similar can be seen in Ireland in a place called the giants Causeway .

These columns of basalt inspired many Icelandic architects to create wonderful masterpieces of classical architecture and the most notable of these is the Church of Hallgrimur in Reykjavik and the national Theatre .

The Vatnajokull glacier has long been studied by scientists. It led to thefact that the area was named National Park in 2008. The region is quite popular among the tourists now.
