Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, in British India in the family of professor of the local school of arts, John Lockwood Kipling and Alice (McDonald) Kipling. Rudyard name he received is believed to be in honor of the English Lake Rudyard where parents met. Early life, full of exotic sounds and India, were very happy for the future writer. But at the age of 5 years of Kipling with his 3-year-old sister was sent to boarding school in England - Southsea (English Southsea , Portsmouth.) [3]. The next six years - from October 1871 to April 1877 - Kipling lived in a private hostel Lorne Lodge (Campbell Road, 4), which contained a couple of Price A. Holloway (born Pryse Agar Holloway.), The former captain of the merchant navy, and Sarah Holloway [4]. They mistreated the boy and often punished. This attitude is so much affected him, that before the end of his life he suffered from insomnia.

Literary activity is becoming less intense. Another blow to the writer was the death of the eldest son John in the First World War in 1915. He was killed during the Battle of Los September 27, 1915, while in a battalion of the Irish Guards. John Kipling's body was never found. Kipling and his wife worked in the wartime Red Cross, spent four years trying to figure out what happened to her son: he has always cherished the hope that, perhaps, the son fell into German captivity. In June 1919, having lost all hope, Kipling in a letter to the military command admitted that his son probably killed. In one of the "Epitaph of War" (1919) he wrote: "If someone asks why we are lost, answer them, because our fathers lied to us ".
