Introduction
Lots of foreigners come to Saratov every day. The purposes of their visits are different. Most of them work here with business partners. And after work all of them want, of course, to see the city.
There are lots of sights in Saratov. One can see many monuments, go to a cinema or a theatre, walk in a park or along the embankment. There are many beautiful and exciting places in the city. Sometimes it is difficult to decide what to begin with and where to go next to present the city from the best point of view.
So we think that it is important and relevant today to work out a sightseeing route around Saratov which will let foreigners not only enjoy the best views of Saratov but also get to know and understand the historical background of the city.
2.1 Working out a tourist route
The aim of this work is to make a tourist route around Saratov.
Methods: To work out the route, we conducted a survey to know other people’s opinion, and to make a list of most popular sights in the city. About 100 people took part in this survey. They were sixth grade students of our school, their friends and relatives (Appendix 1).
We offered the questionnaire in English and Russian, where we asked the respondents if they were born in Saratov and love the city. We wanted them to recommend the sights in order of visiting.
We analyzed the results of such survey and made a list of sights. We also found, studied and sorted out necessary historical information for the tourist route.
We planned the time for visiting each place.
We should say that the guide should tell the foreigners not only the facts but some details which will let the tourists feel the spirit of the city.
Now we’d like to present you our sightseeing rout. Let me play the role of a guide. And I hope the slides of power point presentation will help you feel the atmosphere of our excursion.
2.2 “Saratov Tourist Guide”
“Dear guests, welcome to Saratov. Today we invite you to go sightseeing around the city.
Saratov was founded in 1590. It has a long history. Let me say a few words about it.
Saratov is in a location which has long been inhabited by successive cultures. Historians generally consider Ukek, a medieval outpost of the Golden Horde, as the likely ancestor to today's Saratov. According to legend, Gelonus, a Scythian city that was the northernmost colony of the Greeks, was thought to have been sited near the present-day city. Gelonus is mentioned in the Sixth Book of the Histories of Herodotus, according to which the city was burnt to the ground by the Persian Emperor Darius in 512 BC.
The modern city traces its history to the reign of Tsar Feodor Ivanovich, who constructed several settlements along the Volga River in order to secure the southeastern boundary of his state. During the summer of 1586, the fortress of Samara was founded, followed by Tsaritsyn in 1589 and finally Saratov, located midway between Samara and Tsaritsyn, in 1590. Saratov was built at the insistence of count GrigoryZasekin on the right bank of the Volga river. All three forts were located in a region where the Volga and the Don flow nearest one another, which allowed the Duchy of Moscovy to secure both rivers and to ensure control over the recently annexed khanates of Kazan and Astrakhan in the years following the Livonian War. The future town's buildings were first constructed in the upper reaches of the Volga, a full year prior to the in situ foundation of Saratov. In the spring of 1590, workers disassembled the constructions, marked each log, and delivered the "town" to its destination via the river. This method allowed the buildings to be rapidly erected in just a few weeks.
Many famous people were born, lived and worked in Saratov: world-famous actors O.Tabackov and O. Yankovskiy, a well-known revolutionary democrat, philosopher, critic, and socialist N.Chernyshevsky, outstanding writers K.Fedin and L.Kassil and many others.
Modern Saratov is a big city with population over a million. The citizens are proud of the architecture, history, traditions and culture of the city. Saratov is a major city in southern Russia. It is the administrative center of Saratov Oblast and a major port on the Volga River. Population is over a million. In addition to ethnic Russians, the city also has many Tatar, Ukrainian, Jewish and German residents.
Saratov Oblast is highly industrialized, due to the rich natural and industrial resources of the area. The oblast is also one of the most important and largest cultural and scientific centers in Russia. There are six institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, twenty-one research institutes, nineteen project institutes, as well as the Saratov State University, the Saratov State Socio-Economic University, the Saratov State Technical University and many scientific and technological laboratories
We start our excursion with Open-air Military Museum (the Victory Park) on the Sokolovay Hill. This Park was founded in 1975 on the 30th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War. Here you can see a lot of old military vehicles. The huge monument with cranes at its top was constructed to the memory of Saratov people who perished in the Great Patriotic War. It was constructed in 1982. The author of the monument was Saratov architect Yury Ivanovich Menyakin. He was the Chief Architect of the city at that time. Cranes have become one of the main symbols of Saratov. This monument can be seen on postcards, stamps and tourist booklets about Saratov. If you look down from the mountain you can enjoy a very picturesque view of the city.
Now our bus is going to Saratov Embankment. On the left you see Saratov Regional Museum of Local Lore opened in 1886. Since 1930, the Museum is hosted in a building that is regarded among the brightest monuments of the XIX century Russian classicism. The museum funds comprise about 400 thousand items: extensive archaeological, ethnographical, paleontological, entomological collections, herbaria, photos, documents, hand-written and early printed books, coins and medals, religious items, posters, materials on the history of political, economical, social and cultural life in Saratov. The museum possesses rare materials on the 1921 famine in the Volga Region and memorial collections have to do with Yu. Gagarin - the world first astronaut, P.A. Stolypin - a Governor of Saratov and one of the most prominent Russian Prime Ministers, N.I. Vavilov - an outstanding researcher in the field of genetics, A.G. Schnittke - a composer, L.A. Kassil - a famous writer, some outstanding actors, scientists, authors. The exhibits are laid out in 30 rooms. New exhibitions are demonstrated annually
Now we’re going along the Moskovskaya Street to the Radischev Fine Arts Museum. This large picture gallery was opened in 1885. The founder of this museum was a talented Russian painter, professor of fine arts academy Alexey Bogolyubov. He named this museum in honour of his famous book “The jouney from St. Peterburg to Moscow” Today there are more than 15000 famous works of Russian and European painters. There are exhibited works of many famous artists and sculptors: Karl Bryullov, Dmitry Levitsky, Vasily Surikov, Ilya Repin, Victor Borisov-Musatov, Fedor Rokotoff, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Saryan, Etienne Falcone, etc.
Radischev Fine Arts Museum is the largest cultural and educational, scientific and informational center in the region. Radischev Fine Arts Museum constantly takes part in Russian and international exhibition and publishing projects.
The museum has a number of branches. In Saratov: Museum-Estate of Viktor E. Borisov-Musatov, House-Museum of Pavel V. Kuznetsov; in Saratov Region: The Art Gallery in Balakovo, Art and Memorial Museum of Kuzma S. Petrov-Vodkin in Khvalynsk, the Art Gallery of A.A. Mylnikov in Engels.
On the left there is a park Lipky and Saratov Philarmonia. On the right there is a symbol of the city – the Saratov State Sobinov Conservatoire, the center of music and cultural life of the city. It is a higher musical oldest Russian institution founded in 1912.
Now let’s enjoy the walking excursion along the Kirov Avenue which is a traffic-free zone with a lot of shops, clubs, cafes and restaurants. Here you can go shopping and buy a souvenir.
We’re coming to Saratov Circus created more than a century ago by the Nikitins. It was the first Russian permanent circus.
On the left you see the modern building of Saratov Academic Theatre of Young Spectators named after Kiselyov. This is the first professional theatre for children, which opened in 1918 and moved here two years ago.
Our tour is coming to its end. In the evening we offer you to visit Saratov Opera and Ballet Theatre. “Nutcracker” is on today.
We finish our tour with a walk in the City Park. It is in the center of the Saratov. It is a green area with many ponds. People come here to relax.
We hope you enjoyed the excursion”.
3. Conclusion
We presented you a short variant of the sightseeing route. It may be added with a visit to houses – museums of Fedin, Petrov – Vodkin and Chernyshevsky. We think it can be used for international delegations. It will let the foreigners not only enjoy the best views of Saratov but also get to know and understand the historical background of the city.
