Welcome to Kazan! On the green expanses of Eurasia, in a region of forests, lakes and fields cultivated from ancient times, at the confluence of the Kazanka and the Volga stands a city with brilliant history. This is Kazan.Слайд 2
The Kremlin is the heart of Kazan, its beginning, its architectural masterpiece. Originally the Kremlin was a citadel which defended the population during the wars and troubles.

The Suyumbika Tower , the spiritual symbol and pride of Kazan. It takes its name from the last queen of Kazan, Suyumbika, who legend has it, threw herself from the top after Kazan had been taken by the Muscovite troops.

The Peter and Paul Cathedral was built in 1723-1726 to commemorate the visit to Kazan by Emperor Peter the Great. It is used by the Orthodox Christians of the city as their main church.

Historically, the Bulak Canal formed the boundary between the Russian and Tatar parts of Kazan. The Old Tatar Settlement represents a single architectural-cultural zone.

The Mardghani Mosque was built (1766-1770) by local Tatar craftsmen. The Mardghani Mosque with its Bolgar-Tatar decoration and stone-carving became a real ornament of Kazan.

The Azimov Mosque was built in 1887. In 1851, the merchant Mustafa Azimov, who had been to Mecca, raised a wooden mosque. When he died, his son Murtaza Azimov decided to build a stone mosque in its place.

It was at Kazan University , in 1887, that Lenin studied law and took part in an illegal student garthering, thus beginning his revolutionary career.

Opposite the University stands a building which immediately attracts attention by its richly decorated facade and corner balcony. This is the National Library . This house was built in 1908 by the architect Mufke for the merchant Ushkov. It later passed to his sister, Zinaida Ushkova, hence its name, the Ushkova house.

The new building of the Tatar Academic Drama Theatre , reflected in Lake Kaban .

Freedom Square is in the centre of the city. Once there was a public garden on the area of the Theatre square which now bears the name of Freedom Square.

The Tatar Theatre of Opera and Ballet , built in 1956 on the site of a public garden. The Chaliapin Opera Festival is held here annually.

The Kazan Circus at night. Built in 1967 in a style which brings to mind flying saucers, it has 2.500 seats and is the home of the Tatar State Circus Company.

Kazan is a sacred and mysterious city. It is also an encyclopedia of Tatar and Russian history and culture: almost every house in the old city could tell a story.
