The importance of human life, the meaning of the war, human virtues and vices are the main threads of the story. To my mind, the moral of the story lies in the fact that people should appreciate every moment of their life. I consider the author to have written this novel to make us think about very significant things. Namely, he wanted to explain us that our life is very valuable in spite of different problems and obstacles. He also tried to illuminate us that the war is the most terrible thing in our life. In this way, people should make an effort not to admit such a phenomenon.

Characters The protagonist of the novel is a man Robert Jordan. He participated in the civil war in Spain. He was joined to Pablo’s troop and had to detonate the bridge. In the troop he got acquainted with the Pablo’s wife, an old man Anselmo and with a charming, attractive girl, whose name was Maria. He felt in love with her at first sight. She loved him warmly and sincerely.

They began to prepare for their assault and had a lot of ills with the preparation. Robert Jordan was very nervous and was afraid of the fact that if he didn’t achieve his goal, he wouldn’t save peace and calmness. He wasn’t frightened of death. He was ready to rescue quite by the price of his own life. But in spite of all concerns at the end of the novel they detonated the bridge. Robert Jordan was hurt after explosion of the bridge. He twisted his leg and couldn’t go. He stayed in the place near to the bridge, contemplating nature. He was pondering over the war and the value of human life trying to understand their significance. He looked back on his love as a very happy time in his life.

The nature of Robert Jordan is drawn with admirable skill. He is full-blooded, many-sided and adventurous. The author’s real central figure seems to be complex. He is depicted dynamically because the character undergoes various changes throughout the story. At the beginning of the story we can see him calm and reserved. But then after a chain of disillusionments, contingencies, ascents and collapses he became very active, determined, stubborn and adamant, steadfast in his decisions and plans. The author used the indirect characterization and gives us an excellent opportunity to estimate the major character’s behavior and deeds on our own.

Robert Jordan was an American young man with courage which I don’t think can be common among males of his age. He had remarkable appearance with expressive face features. His well-made figure was of a powerful build. He was of medium height and broad - shouldered . He had a long face with a mole. He also had a fair complexion, high forehead, snub nose. He was endowed with brown sober eyes and full lips.

As for his character, first of all, I can say that he was gifted, very clever and broad-minded because he knew how they could accomplish their plan. He was purposeful and persistent since he tried to achieve his goal in spite of different troubles and obstacles. Moreover, he was sincere, candid and thoughtful. We can affirm it judging by the fact that he persuaded Maria to go away from the place, where they had detonated the bridge. It shows that he was ready to do everything for the sake of his love. To sum all his features up, I can make a conclusion that he was a hero because he deserved to be called so. And without doubts, he was an embodiment of bravery, courage, honor and dignity.

Maria was Robert’s peer. She was a charming woman about 25 years old, blessed with beautiful eyes and a sweet smile. Her voice was warm and friendly. She was incredibly bland, gentle and humble. Robert Jordan was her first love, and she was over head and ears in love with him. She possessed delicate and fascinating face features. And treated people with cordiality, care and sympathy. Judging by her deeds and actions I can also say that she was very determined, bold and courageous.

Pilar was Pablo’s wife. She was a woman of about fifty almost as big as Pablo. She was tall, in a black peasant skirt, her curly black hair was twisted into a knot on her neck. She was a dynamic, active, ambitious and optimistic person. She was very loyal to the republic. Such qualities as wisdom, selflessness , tenderness belonged to her. She was clever and thoughtful. The woman was inclined to responsibility and sensitiveness .

In the novel we can observe an external conflict (a man against man) . It is a conflict between the inhabitants of Spain. The first group sees eye to eye with the government. The second group supports the point of view of the opposition. We can also discover an internal conflict (a man against himself). It is a conflict between Pablo against himself. He didn’t believe that they could detonate the bridge and left the army camp. But he returned with people and horses the next morning. In spite of his doubts and fears he couldn’t give up his comrades and betray them in such a difficult and significant moment.

All things considered I must say that the novel is characterized by the gripping narrative and deep emotional impact. Besides, I would like to say that the story is a remarkable insight into the human character. They are full-blooded and many-sided, adventurous and gifted. Most of them possess a keen sense of humor, deep understanding of people, sensitiveness and willingness to self-sacrifice, which is a very infrequent phenomenon in our modern life. In my view, they are dignified and without doubts are worthy of praising. We can see the incredible human fidelity to his words, fatherland, and actions throughout the novel. In this way, I can say for sure that this novel presented me a sense of admiration and hope. Nowadays there are people who have such strong points as the main characters of the novel. I can also say that the author’s attention is focused on very significant things, which are important among people in all the centuries. The novel teaches us to be more faithful to ourselves, our motherland and people.
