The discovery of Antarctica The Antarctic continent is located in the South Pole of our Planet. Its geography, climate and biological conditions provide a unique environment. Antarctica was discovered last of Earth's continents. In 1820 the members of the First Russian Antarctic Expedition led by Thaddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev discovered it.

Antarctica has the lowest temperatures on our planet reaching minus 89 degrees. Containing 90% of the planet’s ice, it’s the major reserve of fresh water on Earth. About 99% of Antarctica is covered with ice at an average thickness of 26,028 meters reaching in some places as deep as 51,407 meters.

Interesting facts about Antarctica 1 . T he name "Antarctica" is translated as "in front of the bear.“ 2 . Antarctica is the only continent with no time zones. 3 . In 2000 there broke an iceberg that reached 295 kilometers in length and 37 - in width. 4 . Day and night in Antarctica last more than a month. 5. The first man was born in the Antarctic only in 1978 - the Argentinean by the name of Emilio Marcos Palma.

Antarctic defense The arrival of the first tourists in the 50’s was a main cause of environmental concern. Strict rules and regulations were created to protect the ecology and the environment from the visitors such as creating restricted zones , mantain a safe distance from the wild life, not feeding or touching the animals, and rigid control of waste disposal.
