Welcome to AUSTRALIA .
Australia. Australia or the Commonwealth of Australia is the state in the Southern hemisphere, situated on the continent of Australia, the island of Tasmania and nearby islands. There are some other islands in the Indian ocean - А shmor and Cartier, Christmas , in the Pacific ocean - Norfolk, etc. The area is 7.7 million sq. km. The population is 19.7 million people (2003). The Capital is Canberra. Main seaports are Sydney, Melbourne, Fremantle, Newcastle. It is the sixth largest country after Russia, Canada, China, the United States of America and Brazil. It is located to the south from Asia, between the Pacific and Indian oceans. Australia is the flattest continent after Antarctica. It is also the driest continent of the world.
Administrative-territorial division The country is a Federation which comprises 6 states and 2 territories. The capital is located in a special administrative district - the Australian Capital Territory.
a borigines Aborigines are the natives of Australia. Now there are 170 thousand people left (1992).They were exterminated by colonizers. In the language and racial attitude they make a special group. They are Presbyterians and Catholics by their religious belief, but they keep their traditional cults.
Climate The climate of Australia is various - from tropical in the north, up to moderate in the southeast. Australia is in the southern hemisphere therefore there is summer, when we have winter.
Sports Australian are fond of different kinds of sports. They do sports and they enjoy to be spectators too. In 1956 the Olympic Games were held in Melbourne. In 2000 Australia became the hostess of Olympic Games in Sydney.
Australia is the country (society) of many cultures. There live representatives of about 200 nations. Lebanese Italian Greek Arabic Chinese Spanish Danish

Gould Shane Gould Shane Elizabeth (b. On November, 23 , 1970, Brisbane), is a great Australian athlete. She is a unique swimmer in the world, who managed to win three individual gold medals in one Olympiad. She was awarded with the Olympic Order (1994). The triple winner of the Olympic Games (1972, Munich - 200 and 400 m a freestyle, 200 m in a combination), the silver prize-winner (1972 - 800 m in/c), the bronze prize-winner (1972 - 100 m in/c). Twelve times records owner of the world (in September 1972 she posessed all 5 records in female swimming in freestyle). A year after the Munich Olympiad she left sports.
INXS «INXS», Australian rock - group. It was formed in 1977. Its first two albums have been recorded in short enough terms and with the minimal expenses. In Australia they were a success, but in the USA became popular much later.

The most interesting attractions are: Opera House, War Memorial Art Gallery, Australian Museum.
Melbourne Melbourne, a beautiful city in the southeast of Australia, is an administrative centre of the state Victoria. The population is 3.666 million residents (2004). Here you can find The National Gallery of Victoria, the Victorian Arts Centre, The War Memorial and other landmarks.
