Russian seaman, vice-admiral (1830). He was born in the village of Gulyniki in Ryazan province.

His father and grandfather had served in the Russian army as officers in the elite Preobrazhensky Lifeguard regiment (Преображенский Полк) . Vasiliy Michailovich early los t parents and was enrolled Morskoy Cadetsky corps. He was enrolled there when he was six.

He fought against Swedes on board the ship «Ne Tron Menya» (“Don’t Touch Me”) on the 23, 24-th of May and the 22-d of June 1790 and was decorated (был награждён) the medal.

In 1793, Golovnin became a sub-lieutenant and since that time continuously (постоянно) was in mar с h and over boundary. In 1799, he took part in landing and fighting at the seaside of the Dutch.
