The History Of Karachev . Karachev is one of the oldest Russian cities, first mentioned in the Hypatian chronicle in 1146. According to one version, the name of the city (originally - Karachev ) comes from a Slavic word "peel" or "cramps". Also common version that "fee" in Turkish means "black forest", but the name of the city was already established long before the Tatar invasion. With 1246, after the collapse of the Chernigov Principality, Karachev becomes the center of the specific Karachevsky Principality, from the 2nd half of the XIV century was ruled by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1500 became a part of the Grand Duchy of Moscow; was a sentry city from the Crimea. In 1708, was assigned to the Kiev province, in 1719, became a part of the Sevsk province (1727 - as part of the Belgorod province), from 1778 - County town of Orel. In 1920 became a part of the Bryansk province. Since 1929 - Raion centre (originally the Western region, 1937 in Orel, 1944 in the Bryansk region).
