FOUNDATION OF THE UNIVERSITY Stanford University, located between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of California's Silicon Valley, is one of the world's leading teaching and research universities. Stanford was founded by Leland Stanford, a railroad magnate, U.S. senator , and former California governor , together with his wife, Jane Stanford . It is named in honor of their only child, Leland Stanford, Jr., who died in 1884 just before his 16th birthday. Since its opening in 1891, Stanford has been dedicated to finding solutions to big challenges and to preparing students for leadership in a complex world.

PRESENT-DAY STUDENTS Stanford accepts about 6700 students and 8000 graduate students from the US and around the world every year. The university has several faculties: the faculty of business , law, medical and technical departments . The University is one of the largest international educational centres. Among the students there are immigrants from Asia - 55 % Latin America - 21% , Europe - 12% , Africa - 7% , the Middle East - 3% , Australia and Oceania - 2%.
