Laura’s parents were Charles Fillip Ingalls and Caroline Lake Ingalls. She was the second of five children. Her sister Mary Amelia went blind in her teens. Her young brother Charles Frederick died in infancy.

In De Smet , South Dacota , Laura attended school, worked several part-time jobs, and met her future husband Almanzo Wider. In 1882, before her 16 th birthday, Laura became a teacher for the first time. She disliked teaching, but she was forced to help her family financially. Between 1883 – 1885, she taught three terms of school, worked for the local dressmaker, and attended high school, although she did not graduate.

Laura ended her teaching career when she married Almanzo Wilder. She was eighteen and he was twenty-eight. On December 5, 1886 she gave birth to Rose (1886-1968) and in 1889 to a son who died before he was named. The couple’s first few years were very difficult; a bout of diphtheria left Almanzo partially paralyzed, the death of their newborn son, a fire accident, and a series of disastrous events.

In 1911, Laura got an invitation to submit the article to the Missouri Ruralist ‘as a farm woman thinks’. Her topics ranged from home and family to World War I and other world events. Laura’s daughter Rose helped her publish two articles in Country Gentleman magazine . Rose encouraged her mother to improve her writing skills. Finally, Laura became a successful writer.

The Little House book series, written for elementary school children. The books have been translated into 40 other languages. In 1949, Almanzo died at the farm at age 92. For the next eight years she lived alone. In 1956, Laura was ill and hospitalized by her daughter, then she was able to return home and died in her sleep three days after her ninetieth birthday. She was buried beside her husband.
