New Zealand is an island country in the Southwest Pacific Ocean. It lies about 1600 km southeast of Australia and about 10 500 km southwest of California. New Zealand belongs to a large island group called Polynesia. The country is situated on two main islands — the North Island and the South Island — and several dozen smaller islands. Most of the smaller islands are hundreds of kilometers from the main ones .

When European explorers reached the coast of New Zealand, they found the island inhabited quite tightly. The indigenous population of these Islands Maori belongs to the peoples of the Polynesian race and moved to New Zealand from the Islands of Central Polynesia, long before the arrival of the first Europeans. There is no precise indication of when New Zealand was founded as the first Polynesian settlement. However, judging by the genealogies and traditions which are carefully preserved to our days, the Maori have inhabited New Zealand Islands in the continuation of life 25 generations, i.e. approximately from the middle of the XIV century.

The flora of the N ew Zealand archipelago and its fauna has evolved in relative isolation over millions of years. Before the colonization the Islands of New Zealand were almost completely covered with evergreen forests, ferns and flowering plants. However, since the advent of people to the Islands, most of the forest cover was burned or cut down, to make room for pastures and arable land.

The kiwi bird is the unofficial symbol of New Zealand, nowhere else she meets. Five species of birds belonging to the genus basilevych are known and they are all on the verge of extinction. The kiwi bird is a native of New Zealand and is a relative of the EMU and the cassowary, though it is much less. The size of an adult kiwi does not exceed the size of a domestic chicken. You all probably saw and ate a fruit called kiwi. It received its name in honour of this bird.

All water along the island coast is home to over three thousand species of mollusks from microscopic sea snails to giant mussels, 70 shark species, 26 species of stingrays and several species of marine chimeras. These fish, which are often called "sharks-ghosts" are distant cousins of the usual sharks and live at a depth of not less than two miles away.
