History The decision to create a "New College" was made in 1636 by vote of the members of the Supreme Court of the Massachusetts Bay colony. Three years later, the College was named after the first benefactor, the young missionary John Harvard of Charlestown, who left a legacy to the future Harvard University throughout his extensive library and half the assets.
