9 MAY-IMPORTANT DAY IN THE HISTORY OF RUSSIA The spring day of May 9 went down in the history of Russia as Victory Day. This patriotic holiday commemorates the victory of the USSR over the Nazi Germany. 70 years have passed since the day of the Victory of Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War, but its echo till now doesn’t calm down in humans’ souls. We – the new generation of Russia, have no right to forget the horror of that war. We have no right to forget those soldiers who died for our bright future. There is no family in our country which didn’t lose somebody in this awful war.

RED SQUARE IN MOSCOW On this day meetings, marches and parades are organized in every town and city of Russia. The largest parade takes place on Red Square in Moscow.

ETERNAL FLAME The President of our country places flowers at the Eternal Flame. So do other people to show gratitude for those who sacrificed their lives for the future and freedom of their children. Victory was won at a high price. We lost 27 million of Soviet people and saved the world from fascism. It was a very long and hard war, but on the roof of the Reichstag the banner of victory waved in the spring skies over defeated Berlin on May, 1945.

MONUMENTS TO THE HEROES All our heroes cannot be mentioned, but here are a few: Nikolai Gastello, who rammed his burning plane into a column of German tanks near Radashkovichi; the pilot A. Gorovets, who in a single air battle brought down 9 enemy planes at the cost of his own life; F. Smolyachkov, who killed 125 Hitlerites, the defenders of the Brest Fortress who kept rebuffing in a besieged fortress for a month and many others. There are a lot of monuments to the Heroes of the War in towns, villages and cities of our country. For example, the monument to Lieutenant General I.V.Khazov in Pushkin. He was the commander of the 110th infantry corps of the 42nd army of the Leningrad Front. I.V.Khazov took part in the lifting of the siege of Leningrad. He was killed in the battles of the Velikaya River. Every year on the 9th of May a lot of people come to Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery in Saint-Petersburg to put flowers and wreaths on the tombs of those who gave their lives for their city and to read the words of Olga Bergolz: “No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten”.
