Geography: The country of England is one of the world`s most famous and welthiest. It is a country that is a part of the United Kingdom. Scotland is to the north and Wales is to the west of England. The country covers much of the central and southern part of the Island of Great Britain and includes over 100 smaller islands. But do you know that England is 74 times smaller than the USA,59 times smaller than Australia and 3 times smaller than Japan? The name « England » is derived from the Old English name Englaland, which means « Land of the Angles ». The Angles were one of the Germanic tribes that settled in Great Britain during the Early Middle Ages.

History : The history of England is really interesting. At the height of the Roman Empire, England was under the rule of the Romans. At that time there were formed various independent kingdoms. The Anglo-Saxons became the chief rulers of the land. Raids by the Vikings were frequent after about AD 800.

History : In 1066,the Normans conquered England. Throughout the Middle Ages there were many ciril wars. During the Renaissance, England was ruled by the Tudors. In the 12 th century England conquered Wales. In the 18 th century it was united with Scotland and formed « Great Britain » . During the Industrial Revolution, many workers moved from countryside to new urban industrial areas to work in factories. London became the largest metropolitan area in the world during the Victorian era.

National symbols : The three national symbols of England are St.George`s cross, the red rose and the three lions crest. The St.George`s Cross is a red cross on a white background. It is the England national flag. The English red rose is a traditional emblem of England and it is often called the Tudor rose. The Royal Arms of England, a national coat of arms featuring three lions, originated with its adoption by Richard the Lionheart in 1198.

Traditions : England has its own customs and traditions. Englishmen are proud of them and keep them up : 1)The English are stay-at-home people. « There is no place like home » ,they say. 2)They like to live in small houses with a small garden. 3)English people keep to their traditions even in meals. Porridge is their favourite dish. They eat porridge with milk and sugar for breakfast.

Traditions : 4) The English are tea-drinkers. They have it many times a day. They always drink tea out of cups, never out of glasses. 5) The English are always polite and are never tired of saying « Thank you » and « I`m sorry » . 6) The English are in a window- box outside the kitchen or in the gardens. 7) The English love animals. They usually have dogs, cats, parrots, fish and birds at home.

I nteresting places: There are a lot of places of interest in London. Among them there are: Westminster Abbey,the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral, London Bridge, the Tower of London.
