From September 1939, with the outbreak of the Second World War, Elizabeth and her younger sister, Margaret, stayed at Balmorals Castle, Scotland, until Christmas 1939, when they moved to Sandringham House, Norfolk. In 1943, at the age of 16, Elizabeth undertook her first solo public appearance on a visit to the Grenadier Guards, of which she had been appointed Colonel-in-Chief the previous year. Buckingham Palace statements in 1993 called estimates of £100 million "grossly overstated".
