Great Britain Great Britain is the largest island of the British Isles. It is divided into three parts: England, Scotland and Wales.

The Union Jack This is the popular name given to the flag of Great Britain. It is a mixture of the Scottish flag, St Andrew’s Cross, the English flag, St George’s Cross and the Irish Flag of St Patrick’s Cross.

London London is the capital of Great Britain. It began life two thousand years ago as a Roman fortification at a place where it was possible to cross the River Thames.

London has a number of centres, each with a distinct character: the financial and business centre called the City, the industrial part called the East End, the shopping and entertainment center in the West End and the government center in Westminster.

London is called the centre of sights. It has more theaters and concert halls, more picture galleries and museums than any other city in Britain.

Liverpool Liverpool is situated in Lancashire, at the mouth of the River Mersey, where it empties into the Irish Sea. The settlement of Liverpool was first mentioned in 1191, and in 1207 it got the status of a town.

Since the 13 th century it has been a port. In the second half of 17 th century it began playing an important part in the trade with the English colonies in America . At present it is the second largest (after London) sea- port in Britain.

Cambridge It is one of the best- known towns in the world, and the principal reason for its fame is its University, the second oldest university of Britain, which was founded in 1209.

Today there are more then twenty colleges in Cambridge University. The University was only for men until 1871. In 1871 the first women’s college was opened.

Manchester It is an industrial and commercial centre in the north-west of England. In the 19 th century the Manchester Ship Canal was built and Manchester became an important port.

Bath It is a town in the south of England known for its Roman baths. Some are in ruins, others are still used today. The hot water comes out of the ground.
