Peter the Great The monument to Peter I is situated in the center of the Senate square in St. Petersburg. The author of the sculpture is French sculptor Etienne-Maurice Falcone.

Falcone had been working on the model of the “ Bronze horseman" for three years. It was conducted in the Studio of the sculptor. In the yard of his house people could see an officer of the guards who flew on a horse to the wooden platform and put it on its hind legs. This had continued for a few hours a day. At the window in front of the platform sat Falcone and carefully sketched what he saw. Horses for work on the monument were taken from the Imperial stables : horses Diamond and Caprice.

Falcone’s student Marie-Anne Collot modeled the head of “the Bronze Horseman " The first casting of the sculpture was held in summer of 1775 . The top of the sculpture was made in 1777, not resulting at the first casting. In 1778 Falcone was forced to leave Russia. The completion of the monument was charged to Yu. M. Felten . The monument was inaugurated on the 7 th August (18 August) 1782. Ironically for its opening Falcone hadn’t been invited.

According to the plan of the sculptor base of the monument is as a natural rock in the form of a wave. Waveform serves as a reminder that Peter I brought Russia to the sea. Initially Falcone had never dreamed about the monolith , he was going to create a pedestal of several parts. But the granite monolith was found in the area of Lakhta , twelve miles from St. Petersburg.

Transportation of this stone , is quite unique even today. It was the biggest stone has ever moved by man !

Concise signature on the monument: "to Peter I from Catherine II 1782" means and emphasizes the title of the Great emperors of Catherine II and Peter I.
